In the last couple of years, I've discovered the fun of going to restaurants that are BYOB (Bring your own bottle--usually applies mainly to wine, though some restaurants may allow other alcoholic beverages). They are great because my friends and I do like wine with dinner, but right now, going out to eat is a treat in itself, as many of us are not working. A glass of wine at a restaurant can easily cost $5-7, while the bottled wine I buy is typically under $10 a bottle. Another advantage to BYOB is that usually everyone brings a bottle, and we get to have our own little wine tasting.
I don't know how typical BYOB restaurants are in other areas (a friend of mine said her friend in Ohio doesn't know of any there), or other countries. It might have something to do with the alcohol laws here in NJ, from what I understand it can be very expensive to get a license to sell alcohol, as towns are only allowed so many, so it's easier for a restaurant not to bother, and let customers bring their own. I think it works out to the customer's advantage, unless you were just planning to run in for a quick drink by yourself, but then there are bars for that.
So do you have BYOB restaurants where you are? How do you like the concept?

i think we only have one restaurant that does that.
my town kind of frowns on the idea, because of "open container" laws.
i like the concept myself, but i'm sure they'll ban it sooner or later like they have "happy hour".

Your town banned happy hour? That is sad. Happy hour and BYOB are the only way I can afford to enjoy a couple of drinks and some cheap food with friends. Though sometimes we just have happy hour at someone's house and order a pizza. With everyone being either unemployed or "under-employed" lately, we need the cheapest options possible!
