| | Janey You have observed this as well. I some weeks back asked why India people here in Australia have Fast food take aways stores like Hungry Jacks, and McDonald's also 7-11 stores That sell meat produce in the form of Burgers and hot-Dogs as these are Beef (Cattle) cows, These folk also wear the third eye on the forehead, I was under the belief they had the COW as Sarette and the Holy. But to me it must have changed in time from HOLY to the HOLY DOLLAR. and forget beliefs and faith. My question was not commented on by anyone from India, and that made it also very interesting, What do we have here, put the head in the sand and all will pass by unseen ? Mine was a question, not a blame or hate comment, but of interest to have a better understanding. If we do not ask, how will we ever know and understand better of those around us. | | Hi Janey..From what I understand, cows are still very much sacred in India. The slaughtering of the animal to make shoes and handbags is done brutally in illegal slaughter houses. The problem seems to be that not only is it a 4 billion dollar industry, it also employs 2.5 million Indians. PETA has actively attacked the issue and has been successful getting large companies like the Gap, Donna Karan, Eddie Bauer and Timberland to stop buying Indian leather. Another problem is that banning the industry would only put it "underground" as well as unemploy millions. The challenge is now for the government to balance the right of the animals, sacred to many, and the rights of the industry which is now threatened. I personally am all for boycoting Indian leather. I don't want to see millions out of work, but can't stand the thought of inhumane treatment of the animal either. Its definately a huge issue. PETA is a wonderful orginazation and should be commended for the work they have done there..Unfortunately it just isnt enough. | | | | | | |

| | I'm pretty sure it was PETA where I found out about the Indian leather thing...on their British version of the site. Thanks for giving me even more information about this, it is much appreciated. I just needed to understand what was happening and - more importantly, why? I do know that Chinese leather isn't very good either. We have had instances in the UK where people's legs "sting" when they sit on it because of chemicals, I think! It's a huge problem as manufacturing is a dying industry here so leather seems to come from anywhere that's "cheap" but animals suffer as a result. | | | |

| | If you don't want to support the inhumane treatment of animals and will boycott Indian leather to achieve this, then it's also time consider boycotting American beef, pork, chicken, milk, eggs and cheese. Do a search on factory farming. All the animals are cramped into spaces so tiny they can't even turn around. Cows have their tails docked and horn buds burned off, no anesthetic. Chickens are de-beaked. Milk cows are kept perpetually pregnant by artificial insemination to keep the milk flow at max. All are fed growth hormones, all are fed grain contaminated with pesticides, cows & pigs are fed low doses of antibiotics constantly. And there's LOTS more, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Some of the videos are so hard to watch, I just had to stop. I was never a big meat eater anyway, but after seeing and reading about this, I'm giving up meat raised here unless I KNOW where it came from and how those animals were treated. If you have access to free range meats & eggs, stick with that. And if you can get Amish cheeses, you're probably safe there. As far as the cows in India being holy, they are not to be eaten by those of Hindu faith and I think a few other lesser known ones. If a cow died from natural causes, the body could be used for many things, but I don't think the cows supposed to be slaughtered for those things. And milk, butter and cheese could be consumed, just not meat. But Hinduism isn't the only religion in India, so maybe those working in the related industries aren't of that faith and so have no conflict. What boggles the mind is that there are enough people willing to perpetuate these horrible conditions and inhumane treatment of all these poor creatures....in India, in the U.S. and anywhere else these travesties take place. | | | |

| | India is secular, thus there are several communities with different religious thoughts and ideas. therefore, we may say that cows are sacred to one particular religion or community but may not be the same to the other community. hence for one religion it is sacred and for other it is not. Thus cows (cattle)are slaughtered or killed for their skins, beef etc which has now become a major business of export or import in the industrial sector. So one can never conclude easily as cows are sacred in India and yet are killed for money. When money becomes primary to man, humanity never can take a stand and people are tend to such acts merely for that said money. | | | | | | |

| | Is it possible that all these cows are slaughtered by members of India's Muslim community? There are apparently over 100 million Muslims in India, so that must be a possibility. | | | | | | |

| | Cow slaughter is banned in certain parts of the country and it is in the other parts of the world there is no restriction whatsoever and they are killed for whatever purpose. Cow slaughter is banned in India for all purposes. But the slaughter of cattle excluding cows is not banned. | | | | | | |

| | Although the cow is very much sacred, I guess some Indian people are just really desperate for the money that cows can bring in, and so all thoughts of them being sacred are thrown out of the window for a handful of notes and another meal on the table. | | | | | | |

| | That's fair enough but I can't understand why the cow is so sacred if they choose to kill it. | | | |

| | The last thing I want to do is to upset your little red wagon, but you just wrote "Killing is killing, right?" India has been overloaded with holy cows, so much so that they were costing the country millions. They disrupted traffic, ate, and otherwise destroyed human food stuff, and were a $hitty mess in the cities. But all this aside, Killing is not what it seems! No living thing ever dies. All living things such as plants, animals, and people are like chips of God. Would God allow a part of Himself to molder away and be gone? Of Course He would Not! and he does not. Reincarnation happens when the Spiritual body (only the physical is abandoned)changes dimensions and lives again on earth in the body of a newborn animal, plant, or human. (google reincarnation to get the facts) | | | | | | |

| | I have no idea what you are going on about but I will say this. If there was a problem of over-population why couldn't the cows be sterilised? Just a thought! | | | |
