Hello Mylotters! I am applying for an immigrant visa in Canada right now, however, my points (Canada is now having a point system rule to get visas) are lacking. I did not reach the 67 points passing. Mine was only 64. The Canadian Consultant said that in order for me to reach the passing score is to either find a husband and get married OR to study French. Of course, I chose taking up French classes since I don't have a boyfriend to marry to. When I went to one of the schools that teach French classes, I found out that it was costly and I've heard a feedback that it is really hard to learn French (reading, speaking and writing) and I am now frightened if I could ever pass that exam. Anyway, maybe there are some of you here are also taking up French classes or have already took it previously, maybe you could share with me some tips or notes from what have you learned. I would appreciate it much. Thanks!

It is actually possible to find language learning courses online these days (check google). I cannot vouch for how expensive or cheap it would be - in your part of the world, it might seem expensive, but that is just a guess.

As for French being difficult, that is really a question of how adept you are at learning other languages. I am a British national, but I have a propensity for learning languages (that said, I did start learning French at the age of 11), and I do not think that French is as difficult as some other languages that I could name.

By the way, I'm French, so if you have question about prononciations, orthograf or something else, you could pm me, but i don't speak English very well but maybe i could help you. ^^' Good luck!

Taking classes is a must to learn all the rules of the language, but to get some vocabulary I think it's best to watch films, tv shows, read books..at least that's what I've been doing with german and english. I haven't been using subtitles when watching english movies for a really long time and that has really helped me. Also you could try to listen to their music and in particular reading the lyrics. Or get a pen friend (over the internet), actually it's more like a keyboard-friend, with whom you could converse in french.

If you don't want to spend lot of money to take french class, maybe you can learn it online. But u need to be discipline to do this. Because it will be useless for you if u r not serious to study. Here are some useful sites to learn languages:
www.livemocha.com -- this site have many exercise (reading, listening, grammar) and u can submit your practice such as speaking here, and the native speaker will give you any comment or suggestion. This site is very helpful for the beginner.
www.italki.com -- in this site, there are many people that will help u to be your language partner, so you can learn french with the native there. There are many teacher online there too. U can add them if you want.

I don't know if Canada have that rule of getting visa. The thing I don't expect much is getting married will increase our point.
Well, anyway, the discussion is about learning French, not getting Canadian visa.
I have been studying French for about five or six months. And I must admit that French is difficult. Well, maybe it's because I don't try the hardest, cause I still think that Arabic language is even a bit harder than French. I also study Japanese, which as hard as French, especially in terms of writing.
The best way to learn languages is always trying to speak and write it. In other words, we have to always train it. I found it too when learning French. I pause learning it now because I have a work to do, but next time, I want to continue it.
The most important thing is study the grammar, including abbreviation and conjugation. And don't forget to train the pronounciation.
