Yesterday I got into a heated arguement about the Death Penalty, not with an atheist but another Christian. My problem is how can a Christian believe in the Death Penalty. The person who I spoke to said that because the bible says an eye for an eye that this means that if you murder someone that you too should be killed and that is the reason for the death penalty. However, the bible says thou shalt not kill, it also points out in many different areas that forgiveness is important. The death penalty makes you the judge of this person when the only true judge is God. Therefore I am clearly against the death penalty, while I agree that prison is important for those who may commit crimes against the world and it is safer for them to be kept away from the general population for the safety of the people here, I dont believe that includes committing murder. What do you think?

Romans 10:2-4 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
So what your friend is saying they think Jesus would have gladly participated in a hanging? If its not something Jesus would do than its not the righteousness (or action) we should be looking for.

Don't you love it when people who don't really know the Bible just try to quote the well known verses? Tell her that old testament verse was changed in the new testament: Matthew 5:38-48, but I'll just write the first part here: You have heard that it was said, "Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth." But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also..."

God gave us enough wisdom how to behave in a society whether you are christian or not.In this world we have so many ethnic entities, we have to live with them and see that justice given the aggrieved.
