Okay so I'm sitting home stuck in this terrible blizzard that has hit us here in southern new jersey really hard and I've been mylotting all day. I finally decided to get comfy in my bed with the laptop and relax and I turn on the television to find a sho called Roc Docs which I have never seen before. On this episode they are celebrating 40 years of the show Soul Train.
Who here remembers that show?? Or do you know someone who does? I know I do! It was the "Hippest Trip in America"
Don Cornelius was the coolest dude. I remember all the moves you ever wanted to learn you could learn on Soul Train. Some like to refer to it as the Ethnic "American Bandstand"
Soul Train not only allowed local teens to let loose and dance he also had stars like Gladys Knight, Eddie Lavert, and Curtis Mayfield on the show to perform live while dancers enjoyed and danced to the music. It has lasted 40 years and now showcases artists of today and todays hippest styles and dances! It was a great show back then and today and brings back great memories!

Okay now... I'm sorry who doesn't remember Soul Train? You might not remember Don Cornelius but you have had to had seen the show (even when corny Shamar Moore was hosting).
Still I remember Soul Train when they still did the Black history Board. Don Cornelius would always say something like," ..of this famous Black Author who you all should know..." That was the best part of the show next to the hype line. They stopped doing that part I was a little upset. I don't think I watched for the dance moves so much though. I was watching for the female Soul Train Dancers!! Ow!!
I know the show goes back before us too though. I can only imagine what our parents were thinking? Soul Train had to be flyer with the afros and platforms back in the day!!! I wish I could have seen this episode. Wait I can. Youtube... Lol..

I agree that the best of soul train was before our time shamsta- watching the 40th celebration they talked about how the show started off on the east coast....with a totally different style then the west coast (as always) - and when moving to the west coast it took alot to get Don accustomed to the "wilder" outfits and dance moves (Don's words).
They even talked about the Black History board and how it had to be rigged becuase Don's goal was to portray black people in a positive light- and he didn't want someone stuck on a scrambled up word of a historic black figure. It really was interesting to learn the behind the scenes stuff ;)

Isn't it awesome to bring back memories from the past. I have to say though I watched American Band Stand more than I did Soul Train. Sorry you are snowed in and hopefully we all see spring sooner than later.

Although I remember American Bandstand as well I have to say that Soul Train was one of the first shows of its day to have people that actually reminded me of myself and those in my neighborhood. While American Bandstand was filled with faces and people that looked nothing like me- so although I related to the music played, I didn't relate to the crowd dancing as I did with Soul Train.

Yes it was on Saturday afternoons here in New Jersey, USA as well :) It was interesting to watch this special on the 40 anniversary celebration because I never knew that while Soul Train started off on the East Coast...it moved to the West Coast after a couple seasons. Don Corneleous was quoted as saying that he couldn't get used to the style differences in the dress and dance of the kids on the show for a while...until he realized that the vieweres loved the outrageous outfits and dance styles of the West Coast kids just as much if not more than the East Coast kids.
