is this really true? only old people are the ones saying this but if this is the case then i guess a lot of households are not really saving up when it comes to having a limited no. of hours when it comes to tv watching or computer use. i thought only remote controlled appliances are the ones drawing on electrical power even if they are not in use. this sort of saving by pulling the cord happened to me once when i decided to pull the plug of the washing machine. it was almost 200 pesos saved on the bill. not to mention the fact that am not sure if i did this on the beginning of the monthly electricity charge. the saving was just $4 but it was still savings. but then this coincided with the cold months so i thought it was just the lesser use of the cooling system in the house. imagine if all the plugs of all the appliances in the house would be pulled whenever we would leave the house. imagine the amount of money we'd save. not to mention saving electricity is helping planet earth.

Hello there! Unplugged appliances don't draw electric power. Appliances that are plugged and turned off by analog switches to cut the circuit to the mains do not draw electric power. Those that are plugged but turned off using a switch connected to a digital circuit to control the device in standby mode consumes electricity. For example, you turned off a television using the remote control, it only controls the circuit to function in standby mode, the television is not actually powered off, the circuit inside is still active and waiting for the response from the remote control to activate the display so it still draws power because it is plugged and the line through the mains was not cut off. Better turn off the televison using the analog switch (usually rocker type switch) located on its case instead of using the remote control. Another example is the hi fi component. To save power, unplug the appliances which are not in use. Have a nice day!

hello Ritchelle, Since we both from same country,i guess your billing statement stated some tips on how to save some energy. It is also stated there that,it is advisable to unplugged appliances when not in use. I don't have the habit of unplugging appliances before, but when i read about the Meralco advise...i always see to it that plugs were pull out esp at night. And also for safety measures.
