Have you always wished you were left handed when you are right handed?   email this discussion to a friend?

My dad is a left hander. I was always jealous of this because somehow its different. I mean there are so many right handers, but left handers are not that common. Have you ever felt jealous of someone who writes with the opposite hand?

Hi KylaDilla. I'm a left hander, Southpaw. I can't say that I've ever been jealous of those who use their right hands dominantly. I can say, though, that it's been very frustrating at times being left handed! Frustrating in the way that soooooooo many things are designed to be used with the right hand. Like scissors. Most people take this kind of thing for granted because it works just fine for them. For me, it's uncomfortable because of the direction of the plastic where you put your fingers and thumb through. Same with spiral notebooks. The spirals are on the left and I always get a dent in my arm whenever I have to write for any length of time. It's the little things, you know? lol. There are literally hundreds of examples. I've never understood why designers just can't make items that can be used either way. I also had problems as a kid with things like learning how to play baseball. Most of the coaches I encountered were right handed and had no idea how to show me things like batting properly. As a result, I bat right handed when playing ball. lol.

Hi Veromar

Thank you for your response. I was about to respond to your comment about 10 hours ago, but my laptop battery died. Kinda sucks when that happens.

Anyway, I am aware about the issue with scissors. I recall a time my dad was so furious because he couldn't cut the straight line with a badly design scissors. He said that it hurts his thumb.

However, I am not aware of the problem with spiral notebooks. No wonder my left hander friends dislike spiral notebooks! Now I really do understand.

About the designer, I guess they only design for the most profitable market. Thinking back about this, its sort of a discrimination that happens to those who are left handers. But haha I know it's the little things that are always overlooked. I have dyslexia and its the same little thing's that prevent me to do things properly. So i totally understand how you feel. (hugs)

It must feel weird to bat with your non dominant hand. But I am impressed that you managed to train your right hand to bat. On a side note, I remembered how frustrating it was for my dad to teach me to play badminton and snooker, as I was right handed and he was a lefty.

Now you have opened my eyes to a new way of thinking :) Thank you very much for that.

Anyway, mind to share any other issues or experience with being a lefty?

Have a nice day!

I would have responded sooner too KylaDilla, but we had a huge thunderstorm here in Argentina and whenever that happens, I disconnect all electrical things just in case there's a huge power surge or something like that. lol!

It's amazing to me just how much right-handed people take things for granted, such as scissors. Those were just the examples that I could immediately think of. Lots of products are geared toward the majority. Sure...I'm happy to share another experience with being a "lefty"! lol. When I was a kid, being left-handed was considered.....um....unacceptable. As a consequence, my parents tried to "force" me to become right-handed. Especially when it came to using silverware or writing and things like that. They even went so far as to tie my left hand behind my back! lol. That was in the late 60's, early 70's. Nowadays that would be considered a form of child abuse. I understand that my parents were just trying to make my life "easier" in some way but it just couldn't be changed. My sister was also a lefty. They attempted the same with her and it didn't work either. I like being left-handed. I'm part of an elite crowd. To name a few.....Helen Keller, Barrack Obama, Henry Ford, Judy Garland, Michelangelo, Charlie Chaplin, Marie Curie and Albert Einstein...just to name a few. lol.
