Crochet Kits

I have been designing my own patterns for afghans, hats and just about anything that worked for me. In doing that I would have to buy my own yarn and figure out an estimated amount of yarn that I would need. This year I decided to try it a little easier and buy a kit from Mary Maxim. The first one I bought was with boucle yarn. It was a simple granny square pattern in larger than normal squares. The yarn was a little different for me to use and I don't think that I will use it again anytime too soon.
My daughter and I are working on another kit that we ordered for a baby afghan. It's a flower motif in the middle that squares out later in the rnds. It was a great way for my daughter to pick up on crocheting being she hasn't crocheted anything since she was a kid. She's doing the squares and I will be doing the joining and the edging.
Has anyone else ever ordered kits to crochet? Was it worth the time and money? Did you feel that you could have done better if you had pieced it all together yourself?

I have not bought my own kit but one was gifted to me a few years ago. Last year, if not the year before that I decided to try the kit out. It was a kit for teenagers though as the patterns were simple. I'm not a confident crocheter even now so it worked for me. the Yarn was soft and colorful, I forget what it was though... Bernat I think but what ... thickness for lack of a better word it was I am not sure.
I think that if it's more cost efficient and the patterns offered are nice then go for it, you may not always be able to find the yarn you want, but you could always swap it with friends, or freecycle it? maybe even take it to goodwill if there's one in your area!
Have fun crocheting!

I like the kits if I'm in to doing something fast and easy. I like the challenge of coming up with my own designs and yarn put togethers. My daughter loved the kits and she's thinking of doing another one when we are finished the afghan. She's not much into going that extra mile like I am, but it's still good to know that she is getting back into the tried and true art of needle work.
