Gift card? I don't think that is possible. The only way you can verify your paypal account is by using a credit card. And since you are residing in the philippines, a lot have already vouched for that the new smart money card can be used for verification purposes.

I have heard that it is possible to do it with a gift card, though im not completely sure about it. I also have heard there is a bit of problem with the digits that paypal asks but i dont think there´s any harm on trying right?

I think you cannot verify your paypal account using a visa gift card. see, the point in paypal requiring a mastercard or visa card is to verify your identity and since gift cards usaually do not have your name on it, i think they cannot be used to verify your paypal account.

since you're from the philippines, as i am, you could link a bank account in the philippines to verify your paypal account.

it's actually easy to do that. you just have to have a bank account in the philippines and add it to your paypal account. the process goes like this: you must add your bank account to paypal and fill in the information they ask for. paypal will then send two small deposits to your account after you link your bank account. it would be convenient if you have online access toyour bank account so you could monitor from time to time if the deposits are already credited. then, to verify you paypal account, you have to enter the exact amounts of each of the two deposits paypal made. just be sure to link your account properly and enter the correct bank code for the bank you're using.

Paypal has this system of assigning a bank code for each bank that can be linked with them. you can search online, on your bank's site, or on paypal for the bank codes. if you cannot find them, you can always send a support ticket to paypal's customer service and i'm sure they'll tell you what bank code you should use.

also, be sure you have the same name in your paypal account and your bank account because if they are different, the deposits will be sent back to paypal and you wouldn't want that because 1. you will not be able to link your bank account with your paypal account and therefore verify your paypal account and 2. there is usually a charge that the bank makes if a deposit is sent back to the depositor. (in which case, i think it's Php250.oo usually for banks in the philippines.) in addition, you should choose a bank account that has a card issued with it that i affiliated with mastercard or visa since you would need to link this card too and paypal would only accept cards that are affiliated with visa or mastercard. you could find out by looking at the card your bank issued you if it has a visa or mastercard logo on it or you could always ask the personnel in your local bank.

to link your debit card(ATM), you have to add it to your paypal account and provide the information they ask. be sure you also have the same name in the card and your paypal account again because if not, you will not be able to link the card. the point in linking your debit card is if you purchase something using paypal, the funds will be drawn from this card since paypal cannot directly draw funds from a bank account from the philippines. they will get the funds through visa or mastercard by the card the bank issued you. after adding your card, paypal will make two small debits(withdrawals) from your card and you must again verify the amounts paypal debited. don't worry though, i think paypal will return the debited amounts once your card is verified.

since you're from the philippines just like me, i suggest you look at UnionBank's eon cyberaccount since it seems to be a product specifically designed to be linked with online payment processors like paypal. you would not get a passbook for this account but a debit card that is affiliated with visa. There is no minimum deposit for this account but there is an annual fee of Php350.oo for the visa affiliation. You must have Php 10,000.oo in that account if you want it to earn interest though. what's advantageous for this account is that you have online access to it so it's handy since you can monitor debits and credits from any computer that is connected to the internet plus the debit card the bank would issue is affiliated with visa.
