For those that don't know what I have been going through with my son over the last few years I will try and fill you in briefly.

He has always struggled at school, infact it started at nursery when he couldn't cope emotionally and socially. Once at school it was noticed and he had an assessment, though nothing happened. He struggled through without much support. Once he was in his third year at school, they decided to ask me to get him help via a doctor for a re-assessment. We went to see CAMSS first, and the lady we saw after an assessment asked if I had considered the condition ASD (autism). I had never really heard about this condition, but I went home and researched it. My son fit into the spectrum, infact it explained almost everything.

So I asked my doctor for a referral for an assessment for ASD. We saw a phychiatrist. Infact we have seen the same child phyciatrist 4 times now and still no proper diognoses. But we had a full assessment done by a speech and language therapist about 5 months ago. This is the reason for the review. We have had to wait 5 months for an appointment after the assessment, to find out how it went.

This will be the last appointment. If he doesn't get a diognoses then he may lose the vital support he has in place at school, it will also mean the school will not put him forward for a statement of educational needs, which he also needs and will be another battle after this one.

My son is nearly 10 so you can see it has taken a very long time just to get a full assessment done and a diognoses considered. Despite the fact both myself and the school knew something was up.

Has anyone else had a similar battle? I

I hope you get the diagnosis. It's so important, at least over here it is, for him to get the right services at school and outside of school too.

We didn't have this much of a struggle, though when he was 4 the school district tried to put him in as 'developmentally delayed' instead of 'autism', even though he had a diagnosis from TWO psychiatrists. We found out shortly thereafter that this would deny him certain services, so we protested and got his evaluation redone. Really no problems at all since then.

Good luck and don't back down!!!

PS welcome back!

Hi. I am sorry to hear you are still going through this. At this point in his life he should have been diagnosed. Why do they fight the parents on this especially when other professionals can see it? I am glad to hear you are still trying even though they have been blocking you along the way. I knew by the time my son was two something was wrong. I didn't know it was autism, but I had a pretty good idea it was SOMETHING. At three and a half years old, I was finally able to get him diagnosed and I felt he missed out on so much help so I can only imagine how hurt and frustrated you must feel.

WELCOME BACK!!! hugs I'm soooo sorry that you're having so much trouble getting the system to help you protect your son!!! It really shouldn't have to be that difficult!!!! I've added you & your son to my prayers in hope that you be given the ULTIMATE help!!! Never being blessed with children, I haven't faced the problems you're going up against. However, I do have a friend whose daughter has Autism & have watched her struggle in taking care of her child. The one trait I have noticed is NEVER GIVE UP!!! Don't take NO for an answer. Be in their face until you wear them down!!! I can tell it's NOT easy, but is sometimes necessary!!! Good luck in your quest & please let us know what happens!!!

What state are you in? Have you gotten in writing from the school system why you haven't gotten an assessment yet? I think your rights are being violated here as determined by federal law (IDEA). Please email me if you are interested in arranging an online consultation, such as obtaining advice for navigating the legal requirements of IDEA and for obtaining ideas about helping your son specialneedsresources@yahoo.com. My online fee is usually $10.00 for initial consultation and then $15.00 per hour if you ask for follow-up services.
