Sometimes when my daughter is pretty bored to sleep by herself she asks stories to be told. Then I do. I don't generally read out, instead tell them from memory like your father did. But these days such intervals are few and far between. Maybe because my daughter is 11. Our grandfather had told us the stories of Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavatam ona daily basis and completed a planned instruction when we were just school going children aged- 9 to 13!

I am one of the lucky ones. I am a stay at home mom. I make certain that I read at least two stories to my children every single night. In fact the only time that I have not read them a story, has been when they have been at the in-laws house for a sleep over, or at my parents place. In which case the grandparents make certain to read for us. I think that it is important to create that kind of routine with our children, it also gives us the chance to have some quite time together before bedtime.

Hello Ksmita, Yes, I always read to my children. They loved it until they turned like 8 years olds. Then it became less and less because they wanted to read on there own. I think that is why both of are avid readers of books. Big book and novels etc... and I really help my youngest who had a hard time saying "s" and "r"s. I let her read to me alot too which was nice because they got a kick out of it if they told it wrong or cuaght them changing the story like I did for them. Thanks and have a great day and reading Sincerley Unique16

I don't have kids yet, but if I do I would really want to tell them bedtime stories like my mom usually does back when I was still a young dude. Telling bedtime stories is really fun and and help the children go to sleep and have dreams about the stories that their parents read to them also it help create creativity in the child's brain and when he grows up maybe he will become a smart and very creative. That sort of things "in theory" impeded in a child mind helps them grow up a better person. ^ ^

hello ksmita.......how are you. Now my children are grown up, but when they were children, I use to tell them stories, not only at bedtimes, also when they made fuss for eating food, or when they wanted some time pass.....I have always had lots of stories in my memory and I always added some of my own spices to it and made it very exciting. Children loved to hear my stories and I had fun telling them stories and enjoyed the different expressions that came on beautiful innocent faces of children. some times,I even gathered kids from neighbours and together we enjoyed bedtime stories like anytime stories..... Now it has been long time since I did not tell stories to any one.....I will wait some more years till I will have my grandchildren.....may be then I will start my pranks again........

We try to read to our kids, but most the time it's during the day, not right before bed. When they were younger we used to read them a story or two before bed. Our youngest is 2-1/2 and that is how we get him to go to bed like a big boy. We read him the same two books he loves every night and he goes to bed without a fight. As the kids got older and able to take themselves to bed, we read to them less at night.

i totally used to do this when my kids were little but now they are teens and can read for themselves (which they do) i think that by reading to them when they are little, you instill a love of books in the little ones.

Yeah I do but not on a nightly basis. It's actually fun, hearing them respond to your stories in their own little cute way. Things really say the funniest thing. I think bedtime stories make kids and adults a lot closer. You just really have to be patient with them especially when they ask too many questions and won't let you finish your story first...LoL

I had a picture of my aunt reading me a bedtime story. I don't remember any of parents doing so, though. They're always away because they're musicians. I don't have any kids of my own yet but when I do, I'll make sure to read to them before they go to bed or until they fall asleep. I'll make sure to spend quality time with them. Nowadays, children spell LOVE with T-I-M-E.

I think it's a wonderful good night ritual and used to read my step daughter to sleep every night. It was also our special little time. We would pick a short book or agree on 1 chapter of a longer one. It only took about 20 minutes but it is a special memory that we both cherish. She's 11 now so she reads abit before bed on her own but we still have good night chatting time. I was working over 60 hours a week and came home exhausted and yet it was a small highlight of my day to read to her till her little eyes got droopy. I became her step mom when she was only 5 years old so she was just starting to learn to read. Parents are busy but what is more important than the children? Nothing in my mind. One of the main reasons parents are so busy is that they are trying to provide the best for the children so why not do something that will have lasting memories and is special and free? I wasn't lucky enough to have any children of my own so I maybe I see things differently. But my 2 sisters and my brother both read to their kids. And when I visit, I also read to them during the day or early evening. Reading and Education are very important in our family so we make it a priority. We grew up loving to read and I think much of it started with the cozy good night ritual with our mom. My Dad just like yours didn't read to us but he'd make up wonderful stories and I still remember many of them fondly.

Yes, when my children were younger, I used to read to them those fairy tales, I even bought a book of goodnight stories. It was fun reading to them since they keep on talking about it on the next day. It was also my form of bonding with my children because I was working in the office then and they were all left to the care of a nanny during the day. That made us closer and I guess, it was one of the factors why my children are so attached to me even now that they are all grown-ups.

Yes! i read for my DD her bedtime stories. We have a library were i borrow books and tapes. When i get lazy, i let her hear stories from tapes. But most times, i read out. It is also good for the kid's imagination and most stories are best suited for nice dreams.

My Dad always used to read to me at bedtime and I always used to read to my son in turn when he was little. For me it helped me to develop a love of literature which stays with me to this day
