security cameras on public streets - for or against?

Our city is debating installing them on a street where a lot of crime has been taking place. Many people are upset, because they feel like we're on the way to having big brother watching us. Personally I don't mind the idea. I can't imagine any government ever bothering to use them to spy on regular people (i.e. those not comitting crimes), and what would they catch us doing anyway? I think I'd actually feel safer, if we had them. At least if you got robbed or attacked, there would be video evidence of it.

I wouldn't mind having security cameras on the streets. They're keeping you safe and actually help to solve crimes. Big brother comes when they actually invade your personal privacy. What you do out on the street is not private.

U may be true. But the thing is U can recognize a police man from his dress. but cannot recognize a criminal as he is one who looks just any other in the public. Hence I m for it.
