Used to help people lose weight?

I was watching a program on TV recently and woman who claimed to be a nutrition specialist suggested giving to an overweight woman Metformin to help her lose weight. Is this right? The reason I ask is that I was under the impression this is a drug for people who had diabetes.

metformin is typically prescribed for people with diabetes to control insulin levels. since a high insulin level results in no fat burning by the body, using metformin to lower the insulin level makes sense. btw, obese people usually have high insulin levels.
