| |  Maradona's first World Cup appearances failed to live up to the hype. The next time round he was amazing. Experience teaches a lot, you would imagine. That said, Pele (still the greatest ever in my book) was already amazing when he appeared in the 1958 final at the age of 18.
So what will Lionel Messi show us in this year's World Cup finals? Everything that he is capable of, I hope. It is always a delight to see players of extraordinary ability playing on the world stage.
Will it happen? I would be much happier to see a better coach in charge of the the Argentinian team. Maradona had not just Messi, but Higuain, Aguero and Tevez all available, and struggled to get them to the finals. The problem is not Messi, it is giving him the chance to perform to his full potential.
And will he be better than Maradona? Ask me that question in 2018 maybe, if I am still alive then!
