|  Michigan Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak, who was the central figure in the abortion debate surrounding the health care law, will retire from Congress at the end of this term.
Stupak, who's been in Congress for 18 years, will make the announcement at a 12:30 p.m. ET press conference in Marquette, Mich.
Stupak told The Associated Press that attacks on him for his role in the abortion debate did not influence his decision and he could win re-election if he tried.

Dont get me wrong, the guy can retire if he wants to. But do you think that the health care debacle had something to do with it? The Tea Party?
I like what he originally did for federally funded abortions, but I think voting for the health care did him in. What do you think?

| |  I don't think he has any reason for a guilty conscience. Personally, I think his reason for retiring is the threats and other disgusting and obscene messages he's been receiving at his home and office. It kind of makes me laugh that the tea party is taking credit for it. I mean, does that mean they're also taking credit - or accepting the blame - for the threats?

| | I agree that there is no "credit" to pass around. I think the congress people that are retiring this year most likely all have their own reasons.
Regarding the threats and bad behavior, I would hope that groups like the tea party are NOT doing this. I think that these activities are being perpetrating are individual wackos. In my opinion, while I feel very strongly about the issues, violence is not the answer. | | | |

| |  I think Stupak got the message from his constituents...you run again, you lose. So, as he lied before, he lied this time about the "attacks" on him for his role in the abortion debate not influencing his decision. Couldn't even tell the truth on the way out the door...gees.

| | If the threats are real (note my word IF), then I agree, the crap needs to stop. There are ways to tell your Congressman/woman/Senators you're unhappy/angry with the way they've been voting, without threats on their lives or against their families. Such threats are sheer stupidity... But I wonder just how many threats are real (I don't think the Congressman was spit on, I don't think anyone called a Congressman the N word 15 times, I don't think Barney Frank was called a homosexual, I don't think....) and how much of this has been blown out of proportion by the media, especially on the Democratic side. I question some of the Congressmen's accounts of what's really happening and I question the media... | | | |

| | Rep Bart Stupak is the congressmen of a conservative district he had 69% percent of the peoples vote,they believed in him as well they trusted him and he screwed them over.
Most Americans do not condone elective abortion,most decent human being know abortion ends a human life.
Michigan has an unemployment rate of over 20% they are dieing for lack of employment.
The people of Michigan as most thinking Americans know with our country up to it's hairline in debt we can not sustain another 2 trillion dollars in debt.
The people of Michigan needs jobs and not concerned at this time about heath care.
Stupak held out to line his own pockets and the good people of Michigan was kicking his dirty smelly butt out of office and he knew it.
Stupak's son committed suicide he stayed on did not give up his fat steady pay check so no way do I buy he is stepping down because he wants to spend more time with his family.
Bart Stupak is a liars,cheat and thief of other peoples money, his judgment awaits him.
