St. Joseph's for the Lakota Sioux Children | | | | Last year, my Mom and I took a vacation to South Dakota for my uncle's 90th birthday party. SD is about a two-day drive from where we live (New Mexico). We decided to stop in Mission, SD, on the way up to my uncle's and to deliver clothes, accessories, blankets, pillows, etc. to a mission in Mission. We could have donated the clothes locally to Goodwill, the Salvation Army, etc., but we just decided we wanted to help the Lakota Sioux. My favorite charity is St. Joseph's in Chamberlain, SD, which helps Lakota children. Do you have a favorite charity? I tend to give all my donations, with a few exceptions, to the Lakota Sioux. Do you have one charity or do you donate to many? | | | | | | | | | | Bank of America® Setting Opportunity In Motion For Our Customers, Community& Economy www.BankofAmerica.com/Ahead

| | I think one or many...it all helps. I use to donate to many, when I worked. But since I've retired, I have less (money) to give, so I've just focused it on the kids. I let my sister, who's on the Board and Tresurer for the Lincoln County Humane Society, handle the "fur kids". She really works hard for the animals... | | | | laglen (7665)

| | I used to be the volunteer coordinator for our humane society (does that make me eligible for the Presidency?). That was one of my favorite jobs, I left for a better position, but turned out it wasnt. But a job that you can bring cats/dogs into your office to "socialize" pretty darn good job. Or I could go into the kennels when I was having a bad day and get puppy/kitty therapy! I used to sell that idea to my volunteers! I grew the program by about 500% in 6 months! There are some pretty wonderful, generous people out there. | | | | hofferp (2894)

| | Yup, it makes you eligible.... Sounds like you did a great job at the Humane Society. Heck, I would have volunteered for you for puppy/kitty therapy as a bonus. | | | | laglen (7665)

| | trust me, we had fun! I still run into my volunteers at time, and they tell me it just isnt the same. We had a retirement home come in once per week to socialize the animals. Most were Alzheimers patients. It was something they could remember and they would tell me all about their pets when they were young! Our monthly meeting (which they never had before) we would have a potluck, I would get prizes donated and we did trainings. The volunteers made friends (this wasnt the usual case here) and still talk to each other. Outstanding people! | | | | hofferp (2894)

| | I donate time to Cats About Town Society. I donate items usually to either Goodwill or the Salvation Army. I donate money to a variety of things, disaster relief funds, conservation organizations, autism, etc. | | | | | | | hofferp (2894)

| | When I donated to several causes, my causes sounded a lot like yours...Goodwill, Salvation Army, Red Cross, battered women and kids, animals, conservation organizations and heart disease... Now I'm down to kids, but I've started donating my time/services to "hunger in America". I've been building videos for the food banks in NM. I'm just about done with the one for the food bank in Gallup, NM, which serves about 19000 Navajo, Zuni, Spanish and other groups. I've really enjoyed doing the videos and I'm hoping there contributions/donations will increase as a result. I can hope anyway. Thanks, Dawn. | | | | | | | Ask a Lawyer: Child Law 12 Family Lawyers Are Online! Ask a Question, Get an Answer ASAP. JustAnswer.com/Law/Child | add comment | | | |

| | Any charitable giving I do would be to the battered women and children..none in particular just them. That is great that you give to the little children friend. | | | | | | | hofferp (2894)

| | Battered women and children were on my list of charities before my Mom and I decided to donate last year to the Lakota children. Battered women and children are a very worthy cause. I think your cause is great too. Thanks, OceanTiara! | | | | OceanTiara (6977)

| | That's so cool. I'm sure that the Lakota Sioux is even in greater need of donations because it isn't a widely known charity. At least not if we're talking about the entire United States. Maybe it is well known in South Dakota? I do give to charity. I give 10% of whatever I take in to my church (they of course have community outreach programs, as they are non profit). I've tithed since I was a little kid. My parents taught me to do that. I would say every six months I donate clothes, or other items that can be useful to charities that call my parent's house. No one calls me asking for donations, probably because I live in an apartment complex. So when they call my parent's, I always tell them to say that we have things they can pick up. Usually the charities are Prevent Blindness or Vietnam Vets. I have taken clothes directly to Goodwill before, but not often. When I was growing up there was a period we had to buy our clothes from Goodwill. So I especially like to donate really nice clothes to them. I remember when 9/11 occurred I gave to the Red Cross. And I have also given to some animal charities before. One that I really wish I could give to more often is a no kill shelter a couple of states away. Anyway, I'm not mentioning all this because I'm proud of myself. I'm sure I don't give as often as I should. Wouldn't it be fun to be given a million dollars and be told we could give it to any charity or charities we wanted to? That would be awesome. | | | | | | | hofferp (2894)

| | It would be great to be given a million dollars and to be able to give it to all your favorite charities. When I donated to several charities, one of the factors I also considered was the administrative costs. I looked for the lowest admin costs, because I figured more then went to the cause. When I was working, it was "easier" than it is now to donate money. Now in retirement, I donate more things and my time/services. I should be doing more and more often, too.
