I am a nurse and I often read doctor's orders. Although I agree with you that most doctors have poor handwriting, I think they can work this out. Most of them have poor handwriting simply because they are in rush. As time goes by, even if they have hard to understand handwriting, I learned how to read them.
There are also those doctors who manage to make their handwriting readable and easy to understand...

I don't believe there are any secrets to this. From what I know, smart people has unreadable hand writing and doctors are often smart people. That's only my opinion.

I once asked a doctor friend of mine about it and he said that studying to be a doctor takes a lot of writing researches and writing notes as their professors are explaining the lessons. You have to write fast so you can cope up with the topics being explained. So they have been used to writing fast making their penmanship unreadable but we must commend the pharmacists because however uncomprehendable the doctor's prescriptions, pharmacist can understand them.

well, I guess because of that that they have to write really fast in order not to awste their time and the time of the other patients :)
