Ningyo is the name for a traditional doll in Japan. Word-for-word ningyo means "human shape". There is many dolls in Japanese temples. You don't throw a doll in Japan, but you offer your abandoned doll to a temple. Nice tradition, isn't it ?
This one is in a temple in the island of Hokkaido. She was bought in 1918 by a young man for his sister Okiku aged two. It is a one foot long black haired pretty doll, wearing a kimono. A few months later, his sister died suddenly. The family placed the doll in the altar of the house and prayed for their daughter. They noticed... that the hair of the doll was growing !
They moved in 1938 and brought the doll to a temple. The doll's hair is still growing and is cut once a year in a special ceremony.
After an analyze, the doll's hair are human hair.
People think that the girl's soul is in this doll. Since twenty years, this doll is smiling.
There is a song untitled Okiku Ningyo by the Japanese thrash metal band Sabbat. It is traduced by "Okiku, doll of the devil".
Is this doll a devil's doll ?

Here is a link to a japanese site with many photos of this doll :

That is one of the major reasons I'm afraid of dolls as a kid, they look alive, ist like thee is a soul living inside their bodies. I still remember as a kid, I was so afraid of my sister's walking doll that I throw it in the window. Until now she hates me when she remembers it.

You have broken your sister's doll ? I have never be afraid by dolls -- except by Chucky lol --. This one is a sort of living doll, but does not scary me. I think that I will see her if I go in Japan. It's a curiosity : is there a soul in her, I can't say.

I just saw the picture of the doll and I find very disturbing and scary. she looks alive.

Well this is something new. Here in the States you either throw the doll or make a donation to Goodwill or other second hand stores thumbup
I am a girl and I never liked dolls my granny used to scare me and said all kinds of bad things about dolls and one of them was; dolls can be possessed fear devil

myLot reputation of 98/100. topffer (4071)   ranked 1 out of 37 in adalie mysteries and the occult  2 years ago

I think that your grand mother was trying to economize money on toys, and that she succeeded happy. Or maybe she had a voodoo doll when she was a child w00t ? Or maybe she was right because this Japanese doll seems possessed confused ?

myLot reputation of 99/100. Adalie (1491)  2 years ago

rofl well I don't think she wanted to economize money on toys because she is a very religious person; Catholic. You are right this Japanese doll seems possessed. My granny grew up in a farm and she said that there was this church on town that has the statue of a saint; I can't remember the name devil any way she said that his hair would keep on growing no matter how many times the priests tried to cut it would keep on growing, maybe it was a hoax.
But this doll was analyzed and the hair was indeed the hair from a humanfear

Saint Hairry ? I knew a priest who had really bad time to remove every day underwear that pious women at an hundred miles around were pinning on a statue of Saint Antony in his church to get pregnant rasp.
For the hair, I think that it should be interesting to compare the DNA of the doll's hair with the DNA of the girl -- if it's still possible --.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Adalie (1491)  2 years ago

hmm? I can't remember. I will ask my mother when I see her and post it on this section.
rofl Wow underwear I couldn't stop laughing when I read your post. Well I guess some people are very religious and would do everything to get pregnantw00t That would be a great idea to compare the DNA of each one I wonder if the church would allow it that is if they still have the statue. The last time I spoke to my granny on the phone she told me somebody stole a bunch of things from the church.

I believe that it depends of the height of the statue. The Japanese doll seems very easy to steal. A statue or a doll with growing hair is kitschy, even if you don't need a wig rofl. Churches are more and more closed here because of these stupid robberies.

Ive looked at your site and did a search also and it seems that it might be a hoax. Some talk about dolls with dead people's skin and hair also.

I guess Id believe it if I saw it but it seems it might not be true, but its nice to imagine it might be. I dont think it would be evil though.

Hello MagicalBubbles,

I also did a search. This doll is mentioned in some books before the internet (by example in "Modern mysteries of the world: strange events of the twentieth century" by Janet and Colin Bord, Grafton Books, London, 1989, p. 340) ; there is also some tourist information about her. At the end of this blog, two travelers are speaking with a monk of the temple about this doll :

All I can say is that this doll is not a hoax. It's hard to believe, and I will like to see her too.
Thank you for your response.

i have never heard of that song before.. i am guessing it might possibly be a "doll of the devil" there is alot of spirituality used through physical objects... it sounds like something like that would probably be considered a voodoo dollor something similar to that. those r deffinatly of the devil, and purposefully made to try to curse other peoples lives.. but its basically just bullsh*t.. voodoo dolls wont curse u if u dont believe in anything like that

Thanks for sharing this. I love learning about stuff in Japan and also learning about mysterious things so this is a pretty awesome discussion. I think that's a great tradition about the abandoned dolls going to a temple instead of them being thrown out. I don't think it's a devil doll at all, but I do think it's mysterious. happy

myLot reputation of 98/100. topffer (4071)   ranked 1 out of 37 in adalie mysteries and the occult  1 year ago

There are many strange stories about dolls, and some dolls are really devil's dolls, but I agree with you that this one is more mysterious than dangerous.
The idea of putting these poor dolls in a temple is great, and shintoist have also some special ceremonies to purify the dolls and remove the spirits from them. However they don't accept teddy bears in temples and mine had a spirit toosad
lol.
