Illegal is a Crime??  

With national unemployment at close to 10% there will be people who WILL take those jobs if offered. Those statistics do not even count the unemployed who have given up, or the unemployed who are not eligible for unemployment. By the way, welcome to MyLot. I am not trying to pick a fight, but I know so many people who are hurting who would take those jobs, and are never offered. Yes, sometimes they do some of the less than glamorous jobs, but if they are going to stay, they need to try to become legal residents. Another user in another discussion also pointed out that we also have a population of illegal immigrants from other than Hispanic countries and they do not all take menial jobs.

I do not dispute that more Americans would be willing to do those jobs in this very bad economy. I just think that if they are here and working hard that illegal immigrants should not be sent back to their country.

The only reason I this is because I have worked(I was a sous chef) with some Illegal Mexicans & they are the some of the hardest works you will ever see.

SPORTS: Sorry, must disagree. It's a frequently-repeated myth that "most Americans don't want" such jobs. I've done those kinds of jobs, along with countless others. If I were physically able, I'd do one now. This isn't anecdotal; you can find stats on-line. The biggest part of the problem is that certain employees know they can hire more illegals (who can't afford to rock the boat) for the same cost as they'd have to shell out to hire one legal citizen, so they profit, & all of us--illegals included!--lose. The new law must crack down on unscrupulous employers! If not, it won't make a dent in the tide coming in every day.

Meanwhile, none of this even begins to address, let alone stop the violent drug providers, or the slavers, the kidnap victims, the terrorists who cross over into our land, the expensive property damage, or help the innocent people who die of thirst trying to cross the desert, or end up dead from being baked inside oven-hot trucks 10 to 30 at a time!

Well, it's probably pointless to worry, anyway. The way our economy is going, soon the illegal aliens won't find us so tempting. In fact, the flow to "el norte" is already slowing down; I heard that on the news this morning....

SPORTS: I didn't mean to say I disagreed with you in regards to the "hard-working" men & women who come here illegally. I know plenty of people like that, from working with them, but that's not the point.

That said, you need to understand that the U.S. made the laws re immigrants as they're written for good reasons. It's not because we're mean racist, selfish & greedy, either. If I were you, I'd look into how & why the laws were made, & why legal immigration is the only good way to come here.

I am sorry but I know plenty of Americans those here legally who would do those jobs especially in this time of recession but do not get the jobs being told they are over qualified so that the boss can pay the illegals under the legal employment rate and under the table so as to avoid taxes and such. Illegal is illegal. My Grandparents came here legally and others should have to as well. They do not support our system the deplete our hard earned money that goes into programs to help our sick and poor, they take jobs that citizens can equally do and they should be sent back on their own dime to where they came from then apply legally to come in.

OPINIONATED LADY: Correct. You know, it puzzles me. Why don't illegals try coming in legally? I know it takes longer, & I believe they must past a history test & learn English (though maybe not), but if they'd find a sponsor (& since they're here already, that shouldn't be too hard), & be patient, they could be here openly, not have to take the long & dangerous journey through the harsh desert, etc.! So what makes them go to so much trouble--perhaps only to be sent back anyway--when doing it the legal way would be easier, safer, & better & permanent? If it takes money, well, people from other countries, equally poor, have done it. Why can't they?

Of course, this doesn't count the slavers & drug cartels. It's obvious they're not interested in becoming citizens!

Maggie it takes much longer doing it the legal way. In fact as of right now there is a 10 year waiting period. My brother in law is not legal, yet he is married to a US citizen, They told him he would have to go back to Mexico to get his paper work legal, so he did. After he got back there they told him it wouldn't be a 2 month wait like the US INS had told him, instead it would be a 10 year wait. While his wife and kids were still here in the US. After waiting 2 years he came back here illegally because his wife was already to get a divorce, she was already living on welfare because without him working there was no way to pay the bills. Now with him back, they have a car again, they have their own home again, and they can afford to not live off the state.

This is the reason why, to me they should make those that have wives here in the US, have at the least been married 10 years, legal. When it takes Mexico 10 years to get the paper work by then someones family here in the US will have either given up, got a divorce, declared them dead (which can be 10 years), or cost the US tax payers much more then had the illegal have stayed here. My aunt went with the declare him dead because I cant wait any longer deal. Of course 2 years after doing so he came back to the US legal, of course by then she didn't want him back. her kids were all grown by then and they couldn't even remember their own dad.

Add that to the concrete plants.

Think, also, of the fact that most black workers are in favor of the Arizona bill because their livelihoods have been most heavily hit by the rotten economy.

Yes, unlawful employment of illegals hurts everyone--most of all, the illegals themselves! If they would do as legal immigrants do, i.e., learn English, take the steps to do it right, they'd earn far more! So we all get cheated, & the economy is harmed, because of such scurvy employers!

GERTY: I don't doubt that a multitude of such categories exist. I personally know of carpenters, pipe & sewage workers, maintenance workers, cleaners, restaurant employees, & so on. As one who used to work as an industrial site cleaner, I've worked alongside countless such people. I can tell you, I'd rather scrub out toilets & run a wet vacuum machine again any day rather than live in Mexico, beautiful though it is. Too corrupt for my blood!

I think it hits so many people it is ridiculous. I am in a HUGE farming community. Our farmers get their laborers through the worker programs. No problems.

Only one I ever had to take, and it was a LONG time ago--about 35 years. I have no doubt they are easy to beat. We love to get going in the different boxes here, that is part of the fun, so I would never say you were off topic.

SPORTS: Well, on this point, we're 100% in agreement! Most people have no idea how easy it is for people to register wrongly on those tests. It's really just a modern version of reading tea leaves, or entrails... Even "experts" get it wrong, & they're only "interpreting" the person's physiological responses. There's a good reason why such tests are not admissible as evidence in a trial!

Yes, these sorts of silly headlines/statements in general--when they're obvious attempts to excuse inanity (as that one was)--annoy me to no end. It is funny, but it's pretty dark humor.

Do you have any theories as to why such people don't even try to come in legally? Why put oneself at such risk doing it the hard way, only to be forced to hide when one's arrived, & take such low pay, too? I'm completely flummoxed as to why this is!
