how dangerous is insomnia?  email this discussion to a friend?

i can't seem to get a good sleep pattern going on. i'm always wide awake when everyone is asleep. even if i do no off, i tend to wake up early. i really think i've got insomnia... how dangerous is insomnia? how can i get off it?

i want to sleep... :( help

Are you stressed about anything?

I've suffered from insomnia for a long time. I eventually had to go on medication for it because I would go 4 to 5 days without any sleep. For me, it was very dangerous for my mental health. I would get paranoid and not know what was real and what wasn't sometimes. I couldn't tell if I had slept any or just pretended I was sleeping. I was grumpy too. I'm bipolar tho so I need sleep or my mood gets weird.

It gets really dangerous when you have chronic insomnia. If you haven't slept well or at all in weeks, you should call a doctor.

There are a few things you can try to help you sleep before even considering medication:

Avoid caffeine, alcohol or nicotine before bed.

Don't take naps during the day so you can rest better at night.

Try exercising at least 2 hours before bed. Not right before bed because the endorphins will keep you up.

Try to go to bed at the same time every night.

Keep your bedroom comfortable and clean. Sometimes clutter keeps us up.

Have a normal bedtime routine so your body knows this means its bedtime.

Try to breathe deeply and not stress. Often worrying about something keeps you up.

You need to remind yourself that worrying right now won't help but sleep will.

Try different things to relax yourself.

Only use your bed for sleep, not for doing homework and so on. So again your body knows this means sleep time.

Also if you're laying there for a long time and you aren't able to sleep, get up and do something else for about 15 minutes. Something dull. Not something that is going to keep you up all night! And then try to sleep again.

Last night it took me 3 hours to finally fall asleep. And I spent most of that time worrying "What if I don't sleep?" And that just made matters worse.

I hope that helps some. Good luck getting rest! Your body needs it to recover itself and your mind. You don't want to be out making dangerous mistakes because you're tired.

thanks for the advise. i've been trying some of it, but maybe it's because of the stress that's been getting to me for the past few months.

seriously, many thanks for the advice. i'm trying to practice trying different things to relax myself everyday...hopefully it helps :)

I hope it helps. Stress is usually why I can't sleep either. It's very hard to stop worrying and rest. But your body needs it. Good luck :)

i think it is pretty bad for you health to be awake for days on end. it really harms your body. i have insomnia (but i am on sleeping pills) but i also have fibromyalgia which can be a cause of insomnia. you should go see a doctor.

i was recommended to try some sleeping pills. but after reading about a lot of potential side effects, i stayed away from it..
