well why not? It's fairly common in the UK, but there is also equality of income ie the same job is paid at the same rate regardless of male/female post holder. Mind you female income is about 80% of male income here despite discrimination rules so ...

This clearly shows that the girl in question was very nice and generous and she truly loves your friend and to show her love and affection and her commitment, she gifted a wrist watch to your friend. There is nothing wrong in it.

Girls can give gifts? of course they can, I used to give gifts to my boyfriend and it doesn't matter at all even if it is expensive or not what matters most if you give it to the person you love regardless if you will get married or not

There's nothing wrong with women giving expensive gifts to men as long as they didn't steal them. When my husband and I were in our courting stage, I give him gifts because I wanted to and not because there is an occasion. I think it's a wonderful way to show that you appreciate the person if you give them gifts from out of the blue.

hmm, seeing that "phenomenon" in my country would be very surprising. We eastern puts women into passive role, and to see something like that, the woman would be get the mark as too aggressive by my social. However, with the western influence caused by net and media nowadays, little by little our custom changes too. As woman emancipation move, Woman equals with man, she got a chance to get close to the man that she like too and give things to him.

for me, it is completely the opposite. my boyfriend isn't really the type to give me romantic gifts - he would much rather show me or tell me how much he loves me. he says you can't buy someone's love, so buying someone something expensive doesn't tell you they love you. but i frequently buy him things - nothing expensive, just some sweets i know he likes or a dvd i think he'll want.. just little things really. he will occassionally buy me something he knows i want and knows will make me happy, but the way he sees it is if he buys me something and i don't like it, we both feel rubbish, so he waits till he knows i want something, then buy me it. but me, i think i know him really well, so i just pick up something i know he'll like and it always makes him happy. even if i ever happen to get something he doesn't like, at least he knows i was thinking of him, and that's what really matters to him. he's more one for the sentimental words and actions rather than expensive gifts - we can spend more money on going out together that way!

as a men, i experienced that men have the bigger financial problems, like paying the foods, picking up the lady and then taking her back home which costs more for the gas, etc..

i don't mean to say that i'm a cheap guy who counts every cents i spend,
but sometimes girls are taking easy on their boyfriends, without realizing that this is also another issue than just maintaining the relationship..
small gifts can help us relieved..lols

i hope girls don't take my words as a mean thing, :P
it's not a problem for spending more, since there's a bigger satisfaction behind the expense.. :)

No problem with that in my opinion. Gift giving is really for every one. Women being the receiver of gifts is traditional. A girl giving her man a gift is but one another gesture of sweetness and thoughtfulness. That's exactly the same thing a man does whenever he gives something to his girl. Sweetness and thoughtfulness is for every one.

I don't see anything wrong with a girl giving gifts to her boyfriend or husband. I was not even aware there was some law about giving gifts. In fact I think this week I should surprise my hubby with a gift, just because I love him. :)

i often give gifts to my men. If i see that he needs something i will buy him one. he never ask the things, but it just a pleasure if i can give him something then he use or wear it. I guess the loved caused me did so..
