Dogs dying of heat stroke

I have a male lab and we did a stud service. The female lab delivered 4 cute labs. 3 male 1 female. Actually 2 females but the oldest died because the female lab doesn't know how to clean the puppy. Last week was the hottest temp ever in our country.. 2 of the puppies died because of heat stroke. We are going to get the female lab even if she is only a month old because she could die as well. When my mom called the vet she was told that there are numerous cases of heat stroke to dogs. The vet said make sure to place the dogs in a shade (or inside the house) and give them lots of water. Bathe them every other day and if ever the dogs temperature is getting a bit high, put a damp clothe on its head or rub the clothe to his body to cool him down. The vet also suggested to make sure that the dogs are eating well for them to prevent exhaustion, fatigue and malnutrition. I hope when I get my new lab she's still okay. How bout you guys? Do you have pets that have died or suffered because of the hot season?

Luckily we haven't lost any pets to the heat. But we worry about it constantly. It gets insanely hot where we live. I believe last summer it hit 114F. We froze soda bottles with water in them so they were like giant ice cubes and let the dogs play with them. They could lay next to one to cool down or lick the outside. Also putting cool wet towels on their backs can cool them down. We give them short hair cuts and plenty of fresh water. Worse comes to worse we let them in the air conditioned house. Our pets are like family and when I think "ew I don't want to be outside in this heat" I figure they don't want to be out there either and I let them in.

i do that too... putting ice on their containers for them to lick... my male lab wouldn't stop barking if he sees us crushing ice for the halo-halo (ice with milk and different sweets) he likes taking long baths even trying to stay longer than usual under running water... thanks for the comment :)

Yes crushed ice! My dogs think it's a special treat when I give them ice. That's good that you do what you can to help cool your pets down :)

It's not uncommon to loose puppies that way especially if the breeder doesn't have much experience. I always know when my dog is getting ready to birth her pups and someone is always with her to clean up the newborns and make sure they are breathing well. Never leave any dog out in the heat, in the wild they always seek the shade. Dogs don't sweat and can only get rid of heat by panting and from their ears and feet. Take good care of your new dog and you will have many years of love coming to you.

I am sorry about what happen to you're puppies. It is common for heat stroke, owners should be very aware of this. You should tie a wet, cold clothe around you're dogs neck to keep her cool. And make sure to always have you're dog in the shade and make water available at all times.Another thing you can do to prevent this is to always give you and you're dog a break when taking a walk or playing.Heat stroke is a terrible thing.

I have a Jack-Spitz and yes these days are hot even for us. So what I do is give her a bath every other day and when it's really hot I place a damp cloth for her to snuggle on and I also put ice on her bowl with water ( she likes it). I also take her inside my room where it is air conditioned for her to relax. She sleep so soundly in my room especially after taking a bath. Or we got this small fan for her (just so we can conserve electricity) and set it in front of her and she likes it a lot.
