Here's the thing. I just got my first credit card. Shocked because I didn't applied for it and that the bank just said that I was one of the bank account holders that have a good paying background...Hmm... I guess paying the utility bills on time has an advantage after all... Now I'm very reluctant to use it because I'm not the kind of person that shops all the time and go all out but having extra 10 Grand in your wallet waiting for you to just swipe swipe swipe is making my hands itchy... I don't wanna end up getting too much over my head and I don't want to get overwhelmed by this MAGIC CARD (if you watched A Confession of a Shopaholic you'll get what I mean) Any advise you could give me to not over spend and make myself regret ever activating this MAGIC CARD...

I also am a recipient of that "unwanted" Magic cards. :-) I guess most credit card companies or banks use that strategy of just sending valued clients with credit cards even though they haven't applied for it. I was "forced" to use one card now and i didn't regret using it. I myself am not so much of a big spender or a shopaholic. I just make sure that I monitor my purchases and whatever i swipe in my card. I make sure that I do not exceed with my paying ability. For example, even if I have a high credit limit, I will just set a certain percentage..like for example, i will just limit myself with 20% of my credit limit to purchase per month. And i think the very important thing is to pay your monthly bill on time and in full. Because once you have past due account, it earns high interest that may be accumulated over time. So, just pay in full and on time every month.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences and advices. I would really think about it if I will activate this Magic Card. I think I have to be responsible enough if I want to use it. It will not expire until 2 years so I still have enough time to think if its really worth it. I better leave the card at home every time I go out so that I won't be tempted to use it. I guess it will just be used for emergency or on times that I really need cash to pay for something. Thank you so much for the wonderful advices. :)

Quickly cut up the card and throw it straight into the trash can. As soon as you start to use it you WILL be hooked on it, it's just not worth-it. Only spend what you can afford, remember the banks make billions from people using the 'magic card' , these people would never dream about buying /spending this money if it was hard cash in their pocket. So just bin the evil card. PS, make sure the bank dont charge you any money for having the card even if you dont use it, and also dont tell them you have binned it as when you or if you go for a loan, say mortgage or home improvement loan , then your credit rating will be perfect as you have never mis-used your card, (your bank dont know you binned it). The worlds economy is not good right now, no matter where you live or what you work as, dont become part of the problem. Have a cheap and cheerful day.

WHOA!!! if you DIDNT apply for it DON'T USE IT....chances are the interest rate (check the fine print) on it is OUTRAGEOUS for starters and secondly if you didnt feel the need to apply for a card that means IMO you really dont feel you need one..why take the chance?! I get stuff like that in the mail all the time which is funny becuase very rarely is there really much action in my account and hardly ever any money LOL....When I get them, I just toss them... Seriously, I would just cut it up and toss it.

stay out of stores unless you really have to get something then shop around for the best deal. that way you will not be tempted (or shop at thrift stores!)

Just keep using good sense & not do that. People get into alot of trouble w/credit cards. Don't become a statistic. I don't use them at all. I have always thought if u don'thave the money to pay for something, wait till u do.

Hi, If i were you since you didn't apply for the card just don't activate it and keep it somewhere where you will not likely see it so that to avoid the temptations of using the card. Carrying the card with you or putting it inside your wallet will not help at all since you might be tempted and use it anyway. I know others who would punch a hole in the card to avoid using it. Hope this helps.

My advice would be to shred the card. You did not ask for it and well that's how the credit card companys get you in. They send you a free credit card you didnt ask for then before you know it your in serious debt and they are calling you at all hours. I have to say that using that card would be a big mistake. I would cancel the account as well. Cover all your bases and make sure there are no fee's either they sometimes do that when you cancel your account. Just very nicely tell them that you did not ask for the card and to be honest you really don't want it. In my honest opinion credit cards and credit card company's are not worth all the trauma you have to go through when dealing with them. Good luck on what ever you do.

Hiya freymind, I know someone who had one of these given to her by the Bank and said she was a good payer and all that and she ended up with some serious money to pay back. Believe me and the other person who has responded below that it is the worst thing you can do. Take the Card back to the Bank and give them a flat no do not sign anything without reading the small print first. This happened to my friend as she has had a very sorryt time with it all. I know it´s very tempting but if you can´t pay one month that´s it they are after you like a ton of bricks. Sorry I forgot the person below´s user name but she is very right. Say NO to that Bank they are not being kind or good hearted this kind of thing is a money trap to say the least. They cannot force you to take the card so make them have it back if they are awkward about it which they should´nt be seek advice from others. This is none of my business though but I have heard so many stories and not good ones about those magic cards. Sorry to seem like a bucket of ice cold water. Of course it´s up to you in the end. Good luck.
