I guess not but I have been responding to all the ones I saw, that got deleted.

Are people not allowed to have the same thought?

Repeated topics are deleted. We can all go and respond on the first one and turn it into one quality discussion. Makes more sense (and cents too) because it was the first it was not a repeat.

ahh gotcha. why dont they just combine them? or at least tell you where the other topic is when they delete it?

It might be an idea to inform others where the first one can be found

Since I saw you respond or comment on another discussion about posting useful links during your response, where exactly does it say that 'repeated topics are deleted'?

I see where it says..Make sure you search for existing topics before starting new discussions. (doesn't say you can't post similar topics though)

Also in the DON'T section...Make multiple posts on the same subject for the purpose of getting attention paid to your issue. (seems it's talking about the same person making multiple discussions, and not multiple members)

But where does it say that a topic can't have multiple discussions? I'm pretty sure most discussions here have been posted at one time or another. And once the last topic has been discussed, do we all just pack up and move on?

But aren't all discussions similar to another discussion?

I've seen you give examples of discussions on how to edit your profile. So whoever started the 2nd or 3rd similar discussion, should have those discussions deleted?

OH, and I almost forgot...where does it show that 'repeated topics are deleted'? It says that they discourage posting discussions that have already been posted, not that they will delete them.

Plus, to the right of this discussion they have a column of similar discussions. Is that a warning? I noticed one talking about tattoos. Are you not suppose to post a discussion about tattoos now because myLot deems it similar to one about the new NeoBux design?

I just did a 'discussions' search on the little search feature for Neobux design, and the only discussion that came up was this one. The discussion that you pointed out did not show up. What other ways should someone use to search out whether or not a 'similar discussion' has been posted?

AND...under the FAQs it says, memorize the guidelines. The more familiar you are with the myLot guidelines , the better quality your discussion will be, and the less likely your discussion will be removed through the moderation process.

My point being..if your posts do not violate the myLot guidelines, then they shouldn't be deleted. And nowhere in the guidelines does it say that a topic can't have multiple discussions.

What you don't see is that I also report those discussions. I respond and then report. Together with Lamb we created an interest so that we could have just ONE discussion explaining the procedure for the banners and then we, and others, can link to that discussion, instead of having to repeat the same response each time.

Thos are similar but not identical discussions. The discussions which appear there have similar tags to this one but the content is different. Did you look at them and see that they talk about something else? The design of a ptc site will make a completely different discussion to one about fashion design - but the tags might be the same.

It does not say anywhere in the Guidelines 'if your post contains one of these it will be deleted' but it seems to me that it is a fairly obvious conclusion after any one of those 'don'ts' that are there

This isn't a site about boiling water. I'm sure if it were, it would point out that sticking your hand in a pot of boiling water might have negative affects.

This is a discussion site, and nowhere in the guidelines does it say that multiple users can't post discussions that are similar. The guidelines do talk about ways that a discussion can be deleted. It does not give as a reason, creating a discussion that is similar to another users. Nor do I see in the guidelines where it says to report discussions that are similar, as abuse. Help us out and report trolls, flame wars, and troublemakers by sending an abuse report to myLot. I would think that if you feel it wasn't a worthy discussion to be posted, you would use the rating system instead.

An old, or original discussion may in fact be a couple of years old. And the member that started it may not even be around anymore. So to post to that discussion with out any hope of it leading to anything could be pointless. Also, even active users may not want to engage in conversation about a thought they had 2 yrs ago. Plus, as I stated before..when searching for the topic about the new Neobux design, my search came up with only one result: this discussion. Should it be deleted because the poster of this discussion didn't search YOUR profile to see if you responded to or commented to a discussion that was 'similar to' the one he/she wanted to post?

I just don't see why a discussion has to be reported/deleted just because someone feels/believes/knows it is similar to another, when the discussion guidelines do not say this to be against the rules. Perhaps myLot should add it, if it is intended to be implied. Especially if people will go around reporting those discussions as abuse.

Oh, and you and Lamb both created discussions talking about editing your profiles. Would this not have been better suited to just one discussion? Should we report the others since they are similar to the original? Wouldn't it be better to have all that information in a single discussion "about the stuff you place in your profile"?

I agree that there should be something more explicit about similar topics being deleted BUT please be aware that just because a disussion is reported does NOT mean that it is subsequently deleted. If myLot admins think it is not a violation then they leave it up.

The profile stuff is all here, my friend, in one interest. We did NOT make similar topics. We made a combined effort to help users pimp up their profiles and avoid a similar discussion each time:

I understand that not all discussions that get reported get deleted. But if the guidelines do not state that similar discussions might be deleted or should be reported, then why should other members report for the sole reason that they are similar to another?

Yes, I've read the profile info/discussions (a couple of them anyway). And the topics are similar. I've also read the first discussion about Neobux and this one. The first discusses how the member thought Neobux had been scammed when he/she first saw the new layout. Says he/she likes the change. THIS discussion, while similar, talks about how he/she doesn't like the design at all and asks if anyone knows of the reasons behind the change. Also asks others if they like it. Should THIS discussion be reported as abuse just because they had similar topics? The original didn't even show up for me when doing a discussion search for tags or full text. Is it this users abuse of myLot discussion guidelines when performing a search gives no results? Is this an abuse that requires reporting? I don't know if you or anyone else reported it or not, but I just don't get it; especially when it doesn't violate any of the myLot discussion guidelines.

Each of those discussions in the mylot profile' interest deals with a different aspect of pimping up your profile. The only thing that they have in common is that all talk about the profile!

The rest I shall leave to Alice. I cannot answer as an admin would because I am only a user. I am aware of the Guidelines (and of what should be added to make them simpler) and I am aware of the FAQs. I am also aware tha the search engine does not work as well as it should BUT I also know that users are not using the tag function correctly either (note the tags on this discussion and on the other one). I also know for certain that not all discussions that are reported are deleted.

I see your point, but disagree with it too. Of course, I don't see anything wrong with having similar discussions from multiple users. I would understand if they were identical. And yours and Lambs discussions don't just 'talk' about the profile; they discuss editing the content of the profile. WHICH to me, is similar. I wouldn't report it, because I think it's perfectly fine. But also, I wouldn't report this discussion, as it isn't identical either. Especially since performing a discussion search doesn't give any results that it is a duplicate/repeat/identical/or even similar discussion to one that has been previously posted. Had you not posted the link to the other discussion, anyone who hadn't seen it before would have thought this to be the original.

I did a search for how to edit your profile and came up with the above discussion that was posted '1 year ago'. Since this has already been discussed, shouldn't the discussion that talks about adding banners be reported as abuse? I didn't see where he responded on the first one that was posted 1 year ago?

Sorry, I'm just trying to prove my point. Similar discussions happen. They won't lead to the destruction of myLot. I don't see where reporting them as abuse is the answer.

A passage is missing

I can only guess that it has to do with revenue. Advertisisers will not be happy to return to a site that is filled with hundreds of similar topics.

I don't make the rules but I am capable of putting myself on both sides of the fence and seeing it from both sides. We, the users, should appreciate the efforts that myLot make to keep this site fresh and we should not, IMO, hinder them in their efforts.

lol...incorrect or not, it came before the one listed in the 'my myLot profile' discussion about banners. The creator of the banners discussion should have searched it out and could have posted his correct information in the discussion from a year ago. Plus, I didn't see you tell HIM "Did you respond on the first one that was posted?" and give him the link to the discussion that I found doing a simple search? Plus, I just noticed in the guidelines DON'Ts Post similar or identical postings. Stealing posts from other users or posting the same thing over and over again will not help your myLot earnings. Multiple identical postings, even if legitimate, may be considered spam.
Perhaps I stand corrected about nothing being in the discussion guidelines. I'm surprised you didn't catch that..lol. I suppose I should go report your friends discussion on how to post banners. Maybe he can go to the original and correct whatever is wrong.

First, I can't say how much I appreciate an intelligent and civil debate so thank you both for giving me a good one to read.

We don't have any problems with similar discussions or similar topics. Even with effective tagging and searching, it's bound to happen. There are so many variations on the same topic that we know it can't all possibly be covered in one discussion.

Where we must clean house, though, are identical discussions on identical topics. There are often many identical discussions in the same day, in the same interest, and even from the same member.

When you visit an interest to find something to read and discuss and all you can find is the same exact discussion over and over, myLot isn't a very interesting place. Don't you both agree?

We were not making the difference between 'identical' and 'similar' topics!
It is obvious that if there is a column for the 'similar topics' (such as is the one over on the right of every discussion) then those discussions which are only similar and not identical are the ones which are allowed to stay put. That was where we were going wrong and I agree that similar is absolutely fine but identical would just clog the place up.

This has been such an interesting exchange and it is disappointing that not many will see it because it is hidden inside a topic which will, I doubt, be revisited.

I'd also like to thank Alice for clearing this out, might be good to put this information more clearly in the FAQs or something as well ;) But I do also like these kinds of healthy debates so thank you to diana and soonernation as well, you made this discussion much more interesting than it originally was ;)

And I do agree if every discussion were exactly the same, myLot wouldn't be successful.

No, don't be sorry, I like to see a nice healthy debate every once in a while ;) And in fact I know about the april fools joke, it got me talking as well :D
