We moved into this house last August and decided to rent the house from these landlords who can't seem to keep their words. We are very good with paying rent and have never been late and keep their house in very good condition so they are happy with us for that reason.
Last November when it began to get cold out and the weather was changing it's season to winter, our pipes froze and we didn't have water for about three days. The morning we realised that we had no water, we called the landlords and told them what was going on. Three days later, they sent over a plumber. This house has no basement and has two crawl spaces. One is located by our bedroom but in the big closet and the other is in the bathroom. The plumber decided to leave a little heater under the crawl space by our bedroom in the big closet and leave it there for a few hours to see if it would thaw out the pipes and get the water working again.
When the plumber came back, he noticed that the pipes were still frozen and still no water and that was about 5pm. Him and his assistant took the little safety heater to the other crawl space located in the bathroom and put it in there. While he was down under the crawl space, I heard something and seen from the corner of my eye sparks fly out from the breaker box which is located in the kitchen. The reason I could see the breaker box from the living room is because our house has an open concept.
I called to the men and hubby who was standing by the bathroom talking to the plumber and his assistant just to know what he was doing and told them what I had seen and they said there was an old industrial heater hardwired and that's what caused the sparks because he tried to turn it on. He needed more heat in that crawl space so it would thaw out the pipes. The plumber and his assistant decided that he was going to leave that little heater in the crawl space over night and come back the next morning.
After the plumber and his assistant left our house, we wanted to cook something to eat because we hadn't ate supper yet. Hubby wanted to go out to eat at a restaurant and I said no because we just went grocery shopping and had plenty of food to cook and eat. We decided on fish sticks and I went to turn on the oven and noticed that the power was out. When the plumber blew that fuse in the breaker box because of that old industraial heater, we knew that it was hardwired in with the stove. Hubby flicked the breaker in the box and we heard something ignight. We both stopped what we were doing, looked at each other and ran to the bathroom.
I couldn't believe what I was seeing which was black smoke coming out of the crawl space trap door and hubby looked under there and seen that there was a fire. We called our neighbor Jimmy to see if he had an extinguisher and he didn't be he was over here in no time at all. With him he had a large plastic blue cooler filled with water. He ran passed me and straight to the bathroom where the smoke was coming from. He jumped down into the crawl space and threw the water on it. With doing that it fueled the fire and it seemed to get worse. I really wanted to open up a window because of the stench of the smoke and it was getting difficult to breathe but the neighbor told me not to open the window and cause a breeze and make the fire worse.
I called 911 and by the time I called them hubby came back with a small fire extinguisher and put the fire out and bought us some time until the fire department showed up. It did reignite by the time the firefighters entered the house.
They put out the fire after an hour and did make some damages on the outside of the house by pulling the deck away from the house and putting a huge hole in the siding.
The landlord's wife showed up and told us that she felt so bad and was overly concerned. She allowed my son and I to stay overnight at her place just because of the smoke smell. Because we didn't have water she let us clean up and have a shower and we had a nice sleep.
The next few days after this all happened, the house seemed to have a lot of traffic with insurance adjusters and more plumbers, electricans and contractors. We ended up saving the landlords $500.00 for having to pay for his deductable by me saying I would clean up, plus plumber costs because my hubby did all the plumbing work to get the water going. He saved them six visits from the plumbers. I'm not sure how much a plumber would charge someone just for entering a customer's home?
A couple of weeks later the landlord told us he wasn't going to charge us any rent for January and we thanked him for it.
In the beginning of April he told us that he used our damage deposit for that month's rent and now we have to repay back the damage deposit??
He also said to me that he was going to take $150.00 off of May's rent which he didn't do either.

I think from now on I'm going to have to get promises in writing!!

Have you ever had someone take back their words or promises?

I'm not sure who you think is being greedy in this situation. But I definitly think my landlords need to chill out and give us some slack!
I have also stopped paying them before the first of the month because they act like a bunch of drug fiends when they need that rent money and especually when they know we have it before the first of each month.

Thanks for your reply

It's always best to get everything down in writing. If you had written it down, even if it's just on email, then it could have saved you.

I regretted not writing something that was already agreed. Our landlord said he wanted to increase our security deposit, which we agreed, and we asked him if it would be alright to pay him monthly, he said, he was fine with it. My mother-in-law told me to write him an email summarising what was agreed. I totally forgot, eventhough I drafted the email. And when our lease was up (we have yearly lease), he backed down and said he would like the security deposit in full. We had to haggle again and finally he came down to half at the time of signing and half three months later. I can't stop kicking myself for not doing what my mother-in-law advised.

The landlord told us that he would even give us a receipt for that month we didn't pay and when I asked him for it he wouldn't give me one.
I should have written it down with the arrangement and now I know I'm going to have to from now on

Hi Nixxi, Good day to you!
Regret you have underwent such an ordeal! your landlord is not a badman either-- afterall he felt bad and arranged for your that fateful night rest in his place. Good nothing untoward happened & you all came out of the episode...
Keep Smiling!

Last month he had his wife calling us and we had to make arrangements with her all over again. It's like they don't talk or something because she wasn't aware of the things he told us he was going to do. We told her we would have $100.00 for her and she told us that was unexceptable???? She then said she needed at least half but she was so rude about it.
I gave her $100.00 anyway because I didn't care.. that's better than nothing even after they said they would give us a free month for all the trouble and inconvience this has caused us. Plus we saved them a lot of money by me doing the cleaning in here which saved them $500 and my hubby saving them at least $1000 by doing all the plumbing work.

Thanks for your reply

Hi Nixxi, you both are such a sweet tenant, you worked so much & saved considerable money! When the landllady spoke to you, you could have requested for a single agency to deal as -you are right, landlord wouldn't have told her what transpired between him & you....It is painful that you have to go about convincing her.. Anyway forget the past & have happy days ahead & always..
Keep smiling!

Wow that is ridiculous. I am sorry that you had to go through that. I am having problems with my landlord too. The lady that sits in the office straight across from my apartment told me 7 weeks ago that I needed to put blinds up in my daughters room cause they broke. Well then on the same day she said she would send someone over on Friday. I think it was a Wednesday that I talked to her. Anyway 3 weeks later I found out were having an inspection it happens once a year. So they came into my apartment and she made a bee line to my kids room. Comes out and says that she needed to put blinds up. I thought fine it will finally get done. Now she can see my window everyday she comes to work it isn't like she could forget about it. So here it is 4 weeks after the inspection and nothing that I told them about has been fixed. It is getting warm out and I would love to open our sliding glass door but the maintenance man tore it out of the door back in October. I know what your going through maybe you should look up the Tenant rights in your state it might help you figure out what you can do or what you should do. But I would defiantly get those promises in writing. Good luck!

Stupid me I didn't write it down! I should have writen it down and got them to sign it. I don't think they would have signed it because they wouldn't even give me a receipt like they said they would. I'm so sick of renting homes and paying their mortgage. I've been preapproved for a house and I think I'm going to start saving up for my closing costs so I can get out of here!

Good luck on the savings I would love to get out of paying someone else mortgage but unfortunately for me and my family we move every three years we are a military family so we don't really have a choice right now. But I think your right to find a house of your own. Also The market is still on the buyers side right now so I wish all the best. I hope you find a house that you like!

Thanks cb, I hope I find a new house to buy too. All I have to do is start saving and it's going to be a bit difficult because I have to pay these people but I'll figure something out like always. Everything happens for a reason good and bad.

That is terrible, check with yoru city, you may have recourse. That is just not right. Not even taking into account the broken promises about rent but the death trap they are renting!

myLot reputation of 96/100. nixxi76 (1244)   ranked 2,429 out of 26,919 in people  2 years ago

The house is finally all fixed now. The contractor came and disrupted me because he was making so much noise while I was trying to sleep because working my nightshifts. When the fire department came the fire commisionor took that old industrial heater that caused that fire and investigated it. I think it's all the plumber's fault and he should have got his licence prevoked.
I'm just going to start saving up and get out of here!

Wow. That must of been a traumatic experience never mind a change of heart on the promises.
It is always a good idea to get 'promises' in writing. Even if it feels odd to ask.
I had a similar situation where the words spoken changed when it came down to it.
I went to rent a place. On the phone, it was said that the monthly rent was so much. Once I got there, looked and decided to sign an application, suddenly the monthly rent increased by $50!
Just after Christmas, I asked if my rent was going to come up once my annual anniversary came along. I asked because everyone got increases before Christmas.
I was asked how much I am paying now and was then told no, that I am good for the next few years.
Something tells me I should of got that in writing also. Especially with the HST here in Canada coming into effect..
We'll see.

myLot reputation of 96/100. nixxi76 (1244)   ranked 2,429 out of 26,919 in people  2 years ago

Wow that's rediculous. People are so tricky.. they know you need something and they pull the strings and it hurts!
I think now a days we all have to have things in writing just to prove people won't go back on their words and then both sides of the situation know they can't change it. I'm not sure if my landlords just forget about what they've said? But I still think that is unexceptable.
Another thing we have stopped doing is paying them before the first. My payday and hubby's payday fall on opposite weeks but they happen every week. We don't tell the landlord that though. When they know we have rent ready for them before the first of the month they start acting like drug fiends and are just desperate to get it!
We even receieved a call from them in the middle of the month to get the rent earlier because their cell phones were going to get cut off! That made me mad so I quit volunteerily paying it early.

Yeah, as far as I am concerned, I think I have made some promises to my family or my friends, then I will just try my best to make my promises come true in the end.For me, I think I hate the people who usually break their promises so frequently. If you have made the promise, I think you just should try your best to make it come true, which can help you gain a lot faith.

I think people should be able to keep their words without having to sign anything on paper. What happened to honesty? It seems to be thrown out the window these days.

i've noticed two things about landlords from my renting days:
1.they don't like plumbing issues of any kind
2.gratitude is non-existant if you fix something-and if you do it too well, you'll get your rent raised.

that guy never should have left a heater unattended,it probably made condensation near the electrical.he could have cost you your lives if you'd been sleeping-and i'd remind him if he pushes it.

definetly get it in writing where landlords are concerned.especially in case the property changes hands down the road, because the new one will usually try to get you for every little thing they can think of as damage.
one of mine tried to get me for dog claw damaged linoleum (and i had a copy of it being pre-existing)..man,my cat must have grown overnight into a puma to do that LMAOrofl

That's terrible scarletwoman. I don't know who they are trying to kid. I'm not falling for it anymore either. Next time they say something I'm going to throw that in their faces and give them a huge reminder about how the fire could have cost us our lives.

Thanks for your advice,
