Dry or canned beans: pick the healthy choice.

My friends here know that my sister sent me the DASH diet (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension). They explain in detail what must be eaten, what we rather not and why. I was shocked to learn that the huge amounts od sodium we eat are not in the food but in the additions we put into the natural products. Eating canned food is a punishment to your body. I found this example and I´ll paste it here: Beans, cooked from dried or frozen, without salt, 1/2 cup 0-5 mg (sodium) Beans, canned, 1/2 cup 400 mg (sodium) I said WOW!!! So yesterday I found a recipe of a soup with lentils, potatoes, leeks, broth and a little bit of bacon. I decided to try it even though my normal lentil recipe has none of the other ingredients. So I put a cup of lentil to soak. The recipe asked for 1 cup cooked lentils so I put the others in serving sizes at the freezer. The lentils were cooked with no salt (the salt was in the broth and you couls add more to taste but I didnt) Beans, lentils and chicken peas are not so hard to cook. You soak them the night before (I use lukewarm water) and boil them for 10 minutes in the pressure cooker. You can then freeze them to use as needed. I know it´s a lot cheaper too. Do you have hypertension? What are you doing about it? Did you know that a change in your diet could help a lot? I´m on my way to make it posible. Today I went to the market and bought lots of veggies. Share! Hey Jo! This post is made to order for you too.pick

Nope, no hypertension. I tend to use either fresh or frozen vegetables, not canned. Not enough of them, but more than many people anyway...

i just went to check in my cupboard. it is different here (except probably for baked beans). can of pinto beans, 410g - sodium 'trace'. almost none. however. can of tomato soup - 400 grams - sodium - 2.2 grams. that is a huge amount. and i think it used to be more.

and ingredients the beans: pinto beans, water the soup: huge long list of things, few of which sound like food. i've kind of gone off the idea of processed food now. i don't think i wanted to know what they put in it

i hardly ever read labels but i don't eat much processed food anyway. having seen what they put into tomato soup (which sounds nice and healthy) i might eat less. i think some unhealthy food is ok - just not too much. btw the way why are you eating grass? humans can't digest it - have you turned into a rabbit too?

i FIGURED WHEN I STARTED READING THIS u were probably talking to me, lol. The only canned beans i buy are green beans. I very seldom ever cook dried beans just for me. I don't care for them canned. I do have high bp, i take 2 different meds for it every day. U are being very smart to be cooking healthy. I'm trying to do the same.
