How did you celebrate your baby's 1st birthday?  email this discussion to a friend?

kreez21 (32) 2 years ago

Some people believe that 1st birthdays should be celebrated with an elaborate party coz, of course it's their first whereas others won't make a big fuss out of it since they believe that the babies won't remember it anyway.

My baby turns one in a couple of months and I tend to go with the first school of thought... elaborate party!

what is your take on this?

I would have to agree with you on this one the first day of school is of greater importance in regards to a celebration than the first birthday for my neice's first birthday we had a small party with just family and cake and ice cream which lasted about an half an hour. Which was great, now her fifth birthday was more important and her back to school night we really enjoyed it....

Okay this is where you take complete advantage of everything you have for you now...you don't have to do anything big really don't.. but you HAVE to take ALOT of pictures.. here's why.. because it is one of those moments when your baby gets its first boy friend girl friend you pull out all the pics.. embarass the crap out of em.. and you don't have to do anything big no big cake and all that.. for my first daughters birthday we had some friends and close family...all you need unless your baby somehow has a facebook and "tons of friends".... okay... we got my baby a small store bought chocolate cake (must be chocolate because its more visiable in pics) and we sang happy b-day while daddy sat next to her in the high chair ( do all this outside because its gunna get real messy) she stuff her face and put cake all over daddy's.. it was great... and we blew up the pics and they are so cute... okay for the adults we just did chilli dogs and my husband baked a cake for them... as for the gifts nothing was to awesome and its a good thing because all my daughter wanted to play with was the boxes and bags.... but be careful when you make the invites because hun everyone and their dog bring you the most obnoxious and loud toy they can.. so on the invites tell them " what comes around goes around,, wait till their kids party" lol... anyways good luck and I am serious you don't have to go all out just make sure you have a good camera and plenty of film

LOLz, i really laughed about the tons of pictures to embarass the crap out of them :-). That was so cute, i can just imagine your daughter's face filled with chocolate frosting and smothering her face on her daddy... so cute!

I'm afraid its too late to go back now. I already booked a lot of things for my daughter's first party. It will be a very elaborate one :D.

The only reason for cake, is for taking pictures, honestly, and if thats what you need for faraway relatives, do like me and go with a pretty cupcake instead. Its much smaller and easier for the child to handle, and in this economy, cheaper for them to tear up a cupcake, versus a whole cake, even a small one. The rest of us just had root beer floats, more fun for us.

As far as dealing with load noisy toys, we asked if they were going to bring a toy, to make it one that didnt require batteries. This way, you control the nose volume from electronic toys, and you are still being polite about it. And if you are sending out invites, or dealing with relatives calling, wanting to know what to get as a gift, make each request different, based on the person and their cash availability. I have no problem telling my grandmother, on a fixed budget: "Honestly a box of crayons would be great, you have no idea how fast the little artist goes through them!" And then my cousin, who is rather earth friendly "You know, we are trying to get rid of some of the plastic cheap toys, been trying to find some wooden toys, so if that would sound fun to you..."

Dont be afraid to ask straight out for what you need too. Clothes? Ask, just make sure you tell them sizes. Diapers, you know what...Ask! In this economy, people are more willing to spend and help out on a need, then a want.

And just keep the party as simple as you want. But just realise, this is going to be more of an adult social gathering, then kids having fun. Cause after that sugar loaded cupcakes, that baby is going to crash!
