Spring, sun, vitamin D and health

I just read that having enough vitamin D helps a lot to avoid colon cancer. I quote: "The resulting cStudy participants with high vitamin D levels had 43 percent fewer digestive-tract cancers, 29 percent fewer cancer deaths, and 17 percent fewer cancers overall." Sun is a good way to get your daily vitamins and you don´t have to get skin cancer while doing it. Put on a sun screen and go for a small talk immediatly in the morning or in the afternoon, when the sun is not so hard on you. That will be enough and you won´t have to recurr to suplements. Anyway, many foods have part of what you need as your daily allowance. But that usually is not enough. One glass of milk has 300 IU of vitamin D (aprox). What we need is between 1000 to 2000 IU (the highest levels are for grown ups. Do you take care of having the right amount of vitamin D? How do you do it? Did you know that some countries where there´s little sun use ultraviolet rays at schools? Share your experiences!

Good morning Marg, happy weekend to u. I take vitamon d [2000] every day because my dr. told me to on account of the genegerative disc disease in my back . i have lost about 4"in height already on account of it. A friend of mine who was a nurse told me i needed to take calcium to but haven't been to the store so i haven't gotten any yet.

Hi Jo, I´m taking calcium WITH vitamin D (it seems that one goes along with the other) for about a year. My rheumathologist gave it to me. Your friend nurse seems to be a lot brighter than your doctor, if you don´t mind my saying it. It won´t hurt you to take a bit of sun in the morning though. Funny, you are such a close friend and I don´t know whether you are blonde, brunette or with polka dots in your skin I´m a brunette. But you know because my avatar had a picture of me. Besides I think that I uploaded a VERY becoming picture that one of my friends took of me years ago. HUG!

I should be taking supplements, because I do my best to avoid sunlight - tho I hear you can get your daily amount in a short time

I'm one of those pale people that "flash burn" (you remember flash bulbs? one blinding moment and they they turn all bubbly and used up?)

It said that you could put a sunscreen in the morning and go for a walk. The suncreen takes about 15 min to "soak" in your skin, the morning sun isn´t harsh and that´s enough.

I did not know that some countries use ultraviolet rays at school, it is little scary though. Personally I don't take sun bath or go out for sun knowingly. I get vitamin D from milk or sometime going out side on day time. It is always good sun exposure in a limit, otherwise it can lead to cancer. I think if we need to go out on sun than before 11am and after 3pm is the good time to go.

It´s not scary if it´s managed by doctors. I have psoriasis and I´ve been prescribed ultraviolet rays many times. I always hope to get tanned, but it´s no spa. It´s just enough as to be medically used.

I didn’t know that some schools have to supplement the ultra violet rays, it is interesting. We have a lot of sunshine in Australia; in fact skin cancer is a big concern here. I walk my little girl to school every day. We live almost across the road from the school and it is not a long walk but I think it’s enough for my vitamin D needs, not enough exercise wise though; I need to walk a little more for that purpose!

Hiya margi, Yes I think that I am taking enough Sun and Vitamin D too as I take it in a tablet that dissolves in Water one of those fizzy ones. I don´t care for milk on it´s own so I usually eat a bit of cheese every so often or maybe ice cream.

Yes vitamin D is very good to the body. It helps us prevent cancer and make our body strong. But I dont like the sun rays for getting the D vitamins. Its so hot and it burns mys skin. Am not on sunscreen stuff also.
