Best Places to travel in Hawaii for first timers?

I have never been to Hawaii and I am so eager to go but I have no idea on the best place to check out as a first time tourist???? And also do you have any suggestions of hotels???? I know a friend went to one of the main sites like Maui and did all of here shopping believe it or not at Walmart.... Crazy....
