If you found money on the sidewalk, what would you do?  email this discussion to a friend?

Hi everyone:
This question came to my mine, when I had found out that my grand daughter had found money on the school bus. She knew it wasn't hers, so when she got to school, she turned the money in, and she pretty much didn't think about it after than. Well, no one had come forward to claim it, so she got to keep it, and treated her mom to ice cream. So many tines, we as adults, don't think about doing what is right, as if wse need the money, we are sure going to take it and not think anything of it, unless we do have honesty, and trun it it in. It would be hard for me to not want to keep it either, but being a Christian, I know that it would be wrong to keep something that isn't mine. I am so proud of my grand daughter, as she certainly could have kept it, but my son and daughter in law have taught her and her brother what is right and wrong. I am sure they will both go far in this world, and I couldn't be more proud than I am of both of them right now. So, share your thoughts on this as it would be interesting what others would do in this situation. Happy mylotting to all. happy

I would do the same thing, however in this economy, it would be easy to just not trun it in and kkep it, but then that wouldn't be honest either. I was brought up not to take what didn't belong to me,and that has stuck with me all my life, and I am 62. I would turn it in, then maybe in some small way, that no one would cliam it. w00t Thank you for taking the time to read my discussion and respond, and happy mylotting. happy

Same here! I'd feel guilty if I just picked it up and stuck it in my pocket. (:

I will not wait till the owner of the money comes to claim it, if it is less happy. If the money I found was high , I would certainly try to return that money to the respective owner thumbup. That gives me a confidence that if in future , I lose some money , a kind hearted person would do the same help to me in future . And similarly I would not go in search of the money I lost if it is quiet less . Money matters so do people cheering.

That is a very good philosophy, and one that we should all do. I think in my situation, even though I would need the money, I would fee that the person that dropped it might possibly need it more than me, as who knows, it could be all that person had, and they would be looking for it, hoping that an honest person would return it to them. Sometimes, when a person is honest enough to return the money, then they will receive a reward for doing so, and that is the best thing of all. It does pay to be hones, that is for sure. I had a hard time making this star reaching 8/10 but I don't really care now! I will be upfront as always.

If I found a wallet I would definitely give it to the owner.

If I found money on the side walk, without knowing whose that is, and was less than 100 Euros I would keep it.

If I found 100 to 500 Euros though (around $120-$600) I would turn the money in the police giving information on where I found them.

myLot reputation of 96/100. rosekiss (8530)   ranked 1,636 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  2 years ago

I think that it would be hard to return any amount of money, but in all honesty, that is what I would do, as I am a very honest person, and if it would ever happen to me, I would certainly hope that if I lost money, that someone would return mine to me. You never know though, as there are good and bad people in the world, I hope I never do lose money, and the only way that would happen would be if my purse was stolen, but then the crook would have a hard time getting it too. w00t I have never been lucky enough to find anything but coins, and that isn't worth bothering with, as usually it is just a few pennies if that. Thank you for taking the time to read my discussion and post a response, and happy mylotting. happy happy

Oh the problem with Euros is that we have 100,200 and 500 bank-notes so it's kind of easy to loose them if you have em thumbdown

Once though I remember that a woman was about to enter the church, and then $2 felt off her pocket! I run into the church screaming "Mrs! Your money your money!" I got an angry look from the priest lol

i think i would look for its owner.. it it does have any contacts in his/her wallet i will call it but if its not ringing and i can't find a way to find it's owner i would donate it to the church surely God has great way to give it back to the owner in a different way like giving him a blessing of some kind..
i don't like to own it because its not mine, and i would like if i lost my money and someone would try to give it back to me.. isn't that nice..?? don't own what's not yours if you do GOD has a plan for you.. Ü
Have a Good Day..
God Bless.. Ü

You are so right, that we shouldn't keep what we never had in the first place. I like your idea of giving it to the church if no one claims it. That is the best idea I have heard, and you are right, that God would porbably bless the owner of it, and you as well, as you didn't think of yourself but others. That is the way it should be. You are right that God does have a plan for me, even though I don't know what it is. Thank you for taking the time to read my discussion and respond, and happy mylotting. happy

myLot reputation of 96/100. rosekiss (8530)   ranked 1,636 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  2 years ago

Yes, that can be difficult, when it is just money with no identification. I woulod think in that situation, it would nearly be impossible to find who dropped it. However, you could post something on a bulletin board saying you found money at such and such a street and see if anyone claims it. More than likely, it was probably someone who either didn't know it was lost. You never know, but that maybe the person that lost it, might need it more than you or I, but then that is hard to tell as well. I have never found money as of yet, and I really don't want to, even though I could use it. I want money by earning it, not finding lost money. Hi rosekiss..its so good to hear that children are still raised to do the right thing..We don't see enough of it these days. As an adult,of course I know right from wrong BUT..If I found money on the sidewalk, chances of ever finding the rightfull owner would be slim and none and how many people would claim what wasn't theirs to claim..lots..So, I'm christian too and I would look at it like this. God has put this money in my path because he wants me to have it!!! Sorry but I'm honest!

myLot reputation of 96/100. rosekiss (8530)   ranked 1,636 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  2 years ago

Thank you for your honesty,a nd I never really thought of it in that way, but you are right. It is possible that God wants you to have it, as the person who lost it, might not need it anyway, and if you need it, then God knows that, and has blessed you. I have never found money, but if I did, I might think of it like that too, but I would also wonder where it came from and who left it. When it comes to God, we just don't question things like that, and just accept what he as for us. Thank you taking the time to read my discussion and happy mylotting. happy

that would be very of me my friend if that money is very big i would be very grateful to keep it ^^ no offense to the owner of the money.. but if i found a wallet instead and there are locations of his house i would gladly return that money to him because there might be cards there that he might need in his daily life.. im not a bad person to keep money.. hehe if that money has no owner then its mine.. if that has a owner then i return it.. simple hehehe thumbup

I agree with you, in the fact that the person who lost it, probably doesn't even know it is missing, until they would need to use it. I would do the same thing, and try to find the person that lost it, as you never know, but they might need it badly, especially the credit cards or debit cards in the wallet. It is just being honest to try to find the person who lost it. Like I told one other user, sometimes the person that found it would get a reward for returning it, so it would have all worth it. For me I return it to the owner there's a name inside but if happened that not I keep it for a month then if there's no one find it then it is be mine.

myLot reputation of 96/100. rosekiss (8530)   ranked 1,636 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  2 years ago

I do agree that we should give some time for the person to come forward and claim it, and after so long a time, then it would be the person's who found it. I have never really thought about it like that, but you are right, that that would be the best thing to do under the circumstances. I would more than likely do the same thing, as i would definitely try to find the person first, and give them time to claim it before I would keep it. Thank you for responding, and happy mylotting. happy

Hi rosekiss, If the money is in the wallet with a form of identification then without any doubt I will return it to the rightful owner of the money but if I saw the money, just the plain money without any hint of who it belongs to and it is on the sidewalks then I will stay for a while where i found the money for the rightful owner might return and look for it so i will give it back but if no one looks for it them I will keep the money then.

I can say that your grand daughter was really raised well for doing such heroic act. Honesty is still the best policy. Every parent should instill this to their children especially the young ones so that they will carry it with them as they grow old and share it with their future children. thumbup

I am so proud of my grand daughter for doing what she did. It just goes to show that my son and daughter in law have instilled in here good moral values, and I am sure she will remember what she has learned and take it with her throughout her life. I like your idea though of staying with the money for a time to see if anyone claims it. That certainly would be the right thing to do, as you never know if the person will come back to find it, once they have realized they have lost it. I think I would want someone to do that for me, should I ever lose any money. You are right that honesty is the best policy. Thank you for taking the time to respond, and happy mylotting. happy

if I find money, I'll find out who the owner. but if no one is feeling lost, I would donate the money. It would be better than I enjoyed the money I found. because it is not my own money.

I would have to hand it into the police station if i found money. I would feel guilty keeping it in case it belonged to a senior citizen or someone who had very little to live on.

myLot reputation of 98/100. indahfth (5519)   ranked 533 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  2 years ago

to ickleannie,

if it were brought to the police, I do not believe police would find the owner. if money is what we find is not with the identity of the owner.
