Cold-Drinks!! Do they really keep it cool??? |
| |
| Imagine, you are exposed to hot mid-day sunlight, doing something.. You're drained and exhausted!!! So you finish whatever you're doing, as fast as possible and rush to the nearest cafe... You see different cold drinks arranged artistically in the refrigerator... They're chilled, super chilled... Needless to say, you would order one for you immediately... And gulp it all in one go (or maybe, many go-es.. ). I used to do it too, before a few days... Then I heard it from a medic that I wasn't actually cooling my body, by drinking the cold-drink.. He said that the heat actually increased due to the consumption of cold-drink. It was hard to believe for me.. I pondered over this question for past 2-3 days and finally decided to post it here... Dear myLotters... What do you think about it? Do cold-drinks really keep it cool? or do they cause the reverse effect? Please share, what you're heard, read and studied... Thank you!!! | | | | | |

| | There is nothing nicer than a cold drink on a hot day BUT, I also find that a hot drink is very refreshing as well. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Old Chem... Thanks for sharing... I have heard that cold drinks are not really helpful, don't know the science behind it though.. Some say that it contains nothing but soda and CO2- Carbon DiOxide... So it is not good for health, as there are no nutrients... And some add that CO2 may increase the heat in the body... Wonder what is correct now... Hot drink is good when I am really exhausted... At such times, I resort to a cup of tea or coffee and a cigarette... Feels better that way! Have fun! | | | |

| | I'm not an expert on the cooling of the body, but what the guy said about a cold drink making the body hotter doesn't really make sense. Why would the body increase heat, when it knows it should be cooling itself. If the body increased heat when a cold drink was introduced, then it would be doing the opposite of what it should be doing. When you drink a hot drink you can feel it in your body. Your inside warms. So I'm having trouble believing what this person said. I would like to know where he came up with this idea. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Pogo... Yes, I know it is hard to believe... The guy said that the CO2 in the cold drinks increases the heat.. I don't know the science behind it exactly, but I am curious to know... I hope there is some doctor or chemist on myLot, who'll be able to guide us properly on this point... | | | |

| | of course cold drinks can cool you. try drinking something cold and staying in front of an electric fan and see the effect. besides the body is now more capable to cool itself if it needs to in a little while since you are now saturated. | | | | | | |

| | Hi mr_pearl, According to Ayurveda cool drinks will never cool your body, more over it will heat your body. you may feel cool water will cool your body its only a psychological feeling. Tropic region like India if you drink cool water or cool drinks it will work in reverse. If you want to really cool your body then go for a butter milk or simple water. Later you can have cool drink if you wish. As far as my experience is concerned if you have cool drinks in sunlight, you will get dehydration and you may feel more thirsty. So after coming from hot sunlight, just take relax for a while and drink water not cold one. This will workout. Try and see. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Jotomy... Thanks for sharing... Actually, this is what I have heard from a few good old advisers.. That is why, to make sure of the facts, I started this discussion... Many of the participants, though, seem to disagree.. Your post is the first one which says what that medic had to say... What is the logic or scientific reason behind the reverse effect of the cold-drinks? | | | |

| | Hi mr_pearl, when you are in Hot sunlight your body will heated so it should not be cooled down immediately it will effect your liver so you may get problems, gradually you have to cool your body. And more over cool drinks are not really cool your body, it will make you more hot and feel to have more water to cool it. So that is why you feel to have more water. According to Ayurveda, we have to act according to the climate then it works positively on us. There is a saying in telugu "ushnana ushnana seethalam" if you can understand this line i think you can understand whole about the sunlight effects. | | | |

| | if you want to understand the phrase i can give you in mathematical way. ushanana means hot seethalam means cold if you take ushanana as minus - then - X - = + | | | |

| | They make me feel better on a hot day personally. However, that really depends on the person and the drink as well. I do not personally believe that they actually have the reverse effect. I can only believe what experiences my body is telling me. Then again, a lot of medical things I hear are absolute rubbish anyway and really, there are other circumstances that might not cause the cold drink. Plus, if the temperatures are really, really hot, the cold drink will only work for a short amount of time anyway. Plus, the drink might not be really cooled that much. There are all kinds of factors to consider. For the most part, I think they do work. However, there are factors to consider that cause them not to work. However, they do work every now and again. At least in my experiences they do. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Megamatt.. .thanks for sharing buddy... I understand your point of view upon this topic... Yes, there are many factors to be thought about... I would suggest you to read the post above yours... In India, many good old people have a different view upon this topic and it was one of them, a old person who has been a doctor told me about the reverse effect... However, I don't know the logic or science behind it... | | | |

| | This is a good question. It is very hot in the place where I live. I usually don't go out during afternoon or when the sun is up. I feel to have cold driks when I go out in sun. I don't think it really keeps me cool, but I have them just for the feeling of having the cool drink. It feels good when the cool drinks go through my throat to stomach. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Daliaj... Thanks for sharing... I am somewhat like you upon this topic.. I too consume cold drinks and subconsciously I am aware that it is not going to do anything good. But still it feels good to let the drink run down the throat... :) Have a nice time! | | | |

| | I will be cool if I can drink a very cold sofdrinks. Even though the result is change of voices but still craving for the coldness of it as it soothes and satisfy your hotness feelings of the day. It can really cool and comfort your body once you can drink cold drinks after the works you've done in the hot summer day. That is the way I did usually if I felt thirsty and I got easily full if I can drink a cool and ice drinks even water. Seems after drinking we got fresh and overwhelmed of the feeling being fine and smart. Got energetic again to back at work if can drink very cold drinks. Whatever it is I am very happy to drink to satisfy the heat of the sun. | | | | | | |

| | I can feel myself get warmer when I drink something hot and cool down a little when I drink something cool especially something thats been chilled like ice I feel the cold travel through my veins. That seems kind of off to me. I mean drinking a cold drink doesn't cool me off as well as standing on a fan but I don't feel it make the heat increased. | | | | | | |

| | Hi CupKitties... Thanks for sharing... I understand that it feels good to feel the cold-drink running down the throat.. But what about its effects? I have heard a lot about it.. And yet, none of the adviser could give any valid reason for their argument.. None has been able to explain the logic or the science behind their arguments... many say, it is good... Many say it does not cause any effect.. Some say it will cause a reverse effect... None has given the logic, though... Can you throw some light upon that??? | | | |

| | I honestly can't say mr pearl. I'd have to know how they did their study that led to this conclusion. I'm going to assume if they didn't have a valid reason they didn't do any research at all. Maybe one of these scientist guys went out in the hot sun all day and drank one cold drink and got hotter from staying out for so long and then assumed it was because of the drink rather than thinking that it might just be the sun glaring at them. | | | |

| | I wonder which cold drinks they are referring to by the way. Alcohol is the only cold drink I can think of that has had a heating effect on me. Its been argued that soda pops heat you up and cause dehydration. | | | |

| | Hi CupKitties... I am not talking about alcohol, trust me... I don't count alcohol in cold-drinks. I am talking about the Soda, Coke etc things... Please refer to the posts of Jotomy, Quita and a few more members in this discussion... They've given the logical and scientific reasons for it.. Have a nice time!! | | | |

| | I don't really know for certain if cold drinks keep you cool, but I do know that if a person drinks water when he or she is drained and exhausted, water gives some kind of energy boost much more efficiently than sugary beverages. | | | | | | |

| | I don't drink anything hot , ever. I never tried coffee and I triied tea and I don't like it. So The Food Nazis can say that I'm heating my body when I drink something cold but it is a cold drink or nothing! when I get too much sun and heat I am not thirsty. I get nauseous. | | | | | | |
