Rand Paul, Civil Rights | | | | http://www.foxnews.com/po... Republican Senate nominee Rand Paul scrambled to explain his criticism of the landmark U.S. Civil Rights Act, which outlawed racial discrimination, saying he agrees with its goals but questions the federal government imposing its will on businesses. The political novice and Kentucky candidate issued a statement Thursday amid the fallout from a series of interviews in which Paul said he would have opposed forcing businesses to integrate under the law. Democrats seized on the comments to argue that Paul holds extremist views and shouldn't be the choice of voters for the U.S. Senate. Enacted in 1964, the Civil Rights Act was landmark legislation that outlawed racial segregation in the schools, the workplace and in public facilities. It also banned unequal application of voter registration requirements. "I support the Civil Rights Act because I overwhelmingly agree with the intent of the legislation, which was to stop discrimination in the public sphere and halt the abhorrent practice of segregation," Paul said in the statement. Paul added that the "federal government has far overreached in its power grabs," and cited President Obama's historic health care law. He also said the liberal establishment is desperate to keep him from being elected. In his primary victory on Tuesday, Paul had strong support from members of the so-called Tea Party movement, which believes that government spending and influence should be curbed. Paul also had the backing of some key conservatives, including former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Democrats said they believed Paul's remarks were out of line even in conservative Kentucky. Paul's Democratic opponent, Jack Conway, said in a statement that Paul has a "narrow political philosophy that has dangerous consequences for working families, veterans, students, the disabled and those without a voice in the halls of power." And Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth called Paul's comments appalling and said "he has no place holding public office in Kentucky in the 21st century." Paul had told The Louisville (Kentucky) Courier-Journal last month that while he supports anti-discrimination laws, he challenges imposing those rules on private businesses. On Wednesday, he was asked about those comments in separate interviews with National Public Radio and MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show." Paul told NPR said he is opposed to "institutional racism and I would've, had I'd been alive at the time, I think, had the courage to march with Martin Luther King to overturn institutional racism." But Paul added: "I think a lot of things could be handled locally." Hours after the NPR interview, Maddow pressed Paul about whether eateries should have been desegregated in the 1960s in the South. Paul declined to give a yes or no answer. Instead, he said he doesn't believe in discrimination, suggested the issue was abstract and raised the idea of who decides whether customers can bring weapons into restaurants. Asked whether he opposes part of the Civil Rights Act, Paul said if "you decide that restaurants are publicly owned and not privately owned, then do you say that you should have the right to bring your gun into a restaurant even though the owner of the restaurant says, 'Well no, we don't want to have guns in here.' The bar says, `We don't want to have guns in here because people might drink and start fighting and shoot each other.' Does the owner of the restaurant own his restaurant? Or does the government own his restaurant?" Paul is an eye doctor who had never run for elective office before the Senate primary. He says he shares many of the libertarian views of his father, Republican Rep. Ron Paul, who represents a Texas district and was a presidential candidate in 2008. Ok, I know this is a touchy one, but I have to side with Paul. He is simply saying that as a business owner, you should have the right to decide what you want in your business. Like guns. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | I agree. When you increase these laws, that is when things get ridiculous. Then business owners are forced to serve. In my opinion private business is PRIVATE. I do not mean that business owners should be discriminating. If they plan to make a living, they cant! | | | | | | | Ask a Lawyer: Civil Law 19 Lawyers Are Online. Ask a Question, Get an Answer ASAP. | | ... First, there are still certain parts of our nation that AREN'T over racism. Just wanted to say that. Also, I agree that Rand has an acceptable viewpoint. He has repeated over and over that he does not support segregation or racism in institutional businesses (Think Government run.) But is saying Government shouldn't have a say in how a private business is run. (Joe's cafe down the street. Or the private school on the other side of town.) I learned about this on the yahoo news article. That writer is EXTREMELY biased, and wrote a very skewed article in my opinion. http://news.yahoo.com/s/y... | | | | | | | laglen (7665)

| | It does indeed. Most people don't have a thick enough skin and wise enough words to fight like this. I hope he and his family can stick through this. It truly is a rare person who can play both sides of the game and still be the good guy. A very rare person indeed. | | | | laglen (7665)

| | I'm sorry, but I think Paul really blew it on this one. I know it's already being said that Rachel somehow attacked him with a "gotcha" question but he simply refused for over 20 minutes to answer with a simple yes or no. I realize he's not an experienced politician so I'm willing to cut him some slack here but I thought the comparison of racial discrimination to someone allowing or not allowing guns to be brought into a place of business was not even close to comparing apples and oranges. I'm not saying I think he's a racist but I DO think he owes it to the voters of his state to clarify his positions on both the Civil Rights Act and the Americans With Disabilities Act. I must say that depending on the laws wherever a bar or restaurant is located I can understand the argument that it should be up to the owner if guns are allowed. I can not say it should be up to the owner if someone of a particular race, color or ethnicity is allowed to enter! In the case of the former, one can choose whether or not to go into an establishment if they do or do not allow guns and if they don't, one can still enter as long as they don't take their guns, right? In the latter case, no one can control what race they are so that's blatant discrimination which is and should be illegal in this country. I've always actually kind of liked Ron Paul and I've said so here so it's not that I'm against his son although I am a liberal. To be honest, the only things I've held against Rand Paul until this issue surfaced were Sarah Palin and Jim DeMint being for him...lol! Annie | | | | | | | laglen (7665)

| | Annie, I did not watch the Rachel interview, wanted to get that out now. Regarding a gotcha question, isnt that the idea? Not just her show, but all of these "news" shows. I understand your point on the comparison. I think what he was trying to do was compare government interference in private business. here is a video clip of him explaining http://www.cnn.com/video/... | | | | lilwonders456 (3526)

| | This is a question that Rand should have taken more time to answer more throughly. KNowing Rand and Ron Paul the way I do (not personally but politically) I know exactly what he meant but a lot of people don't...so it can be twisted. No he is not racist. No he does not think people should discriminated against based on a handicap or skin color. But he does believe that private companies should not be regulated by the federal government. He believes in "free market" or "free trade". Where business owners run their business how they want....and the consumers are the ones who decide if they want to buy things from that business. If a company or business owners makes stupid rules that offend people...than consumers won't buy from them...which will make them go out of business. So therefore to stay in business companies will run their companies according to what the consumer wants. It is putting the power and control back in the hands of the consumers. The everyday people. It is freedom of choice for both sides. The business owner gets to decide how he wants to run his company...the consumer decides based on those decisions if they want to do business with that company. Lets say for the sake of arguement that some stupid company owner decided he did not want to sell his product to people based on skin color....well you know what would happen don't you? It would be all over the news. Everyone would know about it. Poeple of all races would be mad and not do business with that company which would leaad to it going out of business. So the checks and balances are there. It is just not controlled by the federal goverment but by the actual citizens of this country. He is saying that business practices should be dictated by the consumer not the federal government. That is all. On a side note....good to see you back annie...I hope you are feeling better. I have been thinking about you this past week and hoped you were doing ok. | | | | laglen (7665)

| | Oh laglen...as you have seen from this interview and others...reporters are going to twist this to make him look bad. Instead of actually explaining the full version of what he believes. It is easier to call him a racist than call him a "free market" believer. Sense when has the news cared about the "truth"? that does not sell papers and cause the ratings to go up. It is all about causing contraversy and getting the high ratings. So be prepared for this to get blown way out of proporation with people screaming racist instead of people screaming free marketist. | | | | laglen (7665)

| | Very true...you could not pay me enough to go into politics as a profession. Imagine having to deal with those crooks, criminals and unethical jerks on a daily basis...and that would just be your fellow elected officials...then you add the lobbyists to that mix...nope..not worth the head ache. I don't think any sane person WOULD want to serve with those jerks. | | | | laglen (7665)

| | Nope we can't forget them...so putting it all together...does not sound very fun does it? Most honest people would just say screw it and not bother to run. But when ones does....they get torn apart. So the power hungry, unethical jerks are the ones voted in. And we wonder why our country is in the state it is in? | | | | laglen (7665)
