Do You Have A Reliable Unbrella That Doesn't Turn Inside Out In the Wind?

At last I have an umbrella that is indeed reliable and is a free one too! My Dad bought some Royal Canin for the cats and it came with, yes, you guessed it a free umbrella. Not surprisingly, it has pics of cats, dogs and rabbits all over it. John feels a bit self-conscious using it but I love it! I have tested it in the wind and it doesn't turn inside out which makes a change. It's highly embarrassing when that happens! The best umbrella I ever had was a plain blue one from Marks & Spencer. I bought it in the late 80s for about £12, which was a lot of money then. It was so satisfying walking around Blackpool (which is a seaside resort and can get very windswept at times) knowing that my umbrella WOULD NOT turn inside out. I could take it anywhere! It wasn't a golfing umbrella either. It was big (and my Royal Canin one is too) but not absolutely massive. To be honest, I think golfing umbrellas are a bit of a pain. The times I've had to virtually walk into the road in order to get round one (and not get my eye poked out) is untrue! So, tell me, is your umbrella up to the job? Do you get through quite a few of them in a year or have you had yours for absolutely ages?

I had an absolutely wonderful umbrella for about 12 years, until I lost it in the mid-80s. Haven't come across its equal since. I have a couple of adequate umbrellas now, but they will turn out in a strong wind.

Oh my can you remember the brand? I know there are really good brands of umbrella but I just can't remember them off-hand. 12 years, wow, that's impressive. Would I be upset if I'd lost an umbrella like that. Having said that, the blue one I mentioned was lent to my nephew's Mum never to be seen again. She has a pair of my shoes as well but I can't be bothered mentioning it now, it was about 18 years ago. Haha!

It rains here so seldom, I don't own an umbrella. And when it does rain, I walk without an umbrella just to enjoy the rain. When I golf, I don't use an umbrella...I ride in a cart.

I do know what you mean about enjoying the rain WITHOUT an umbrella. If I'm not walking very far then I do tend to go without one and it can be quite refreshing being rained on in the UK lol.

You got the golden ticket! I have never in my life had a decent umbrella and I’ve lost count of how many I bought. To be fair, I live in Wales and that’s about the harshest test an umbrella can be given, but I would love one that could take on the challenge for once, instead of leaving me fighting wind and metal in the rain! Lucky you!

I'm with you there! The ones that fold up small and fit in your hand bag seem handy at the time, but they fail you in the long run! A big, embarrassing golf umbrella seems to be the only solution!

Well, it's the "embarrassment factor" of doing what you have to do in making sure I do have a decent umbrella - although this latest one was free so yes, I suppose I am lucky. I still hate using it though because it's a bit large and I can't put it in my bag. Got caught in the rain a few times because I couldn't be bothered taking the umbrella out!

I didn't know there was such a thing as an umbrella that doesn't turn inside out in the wind. Then again, it never rains in California...

Hi Jane, My umbrella is good enough to battle with the wind! I don't use the folding umbrella. i use the long one. it's my partner not only to protect me from the heat of the sun and get wet from the rain but a good weapon.

Hiya Winky! Unfortunately (if you can call it that) it never really gets hot enough here to use umbrellas in the sun although the Brits are bound to moan about it if that day ever comes!

that is so cool. at least no need for you you to be worried about getting burned or being exposed to sunlight as it's not a normal weather in your place. but i remember you want sun and even dream of enjoying that season in our country right?

Don't get me wrong, we DO get the sun and when it comes out everyone loves it but it rarely becomes so hot that we have to protect ourselves with umbrellas, although it has been known, say, in London where it's warmer there anyway. When I was at Mum's recently I was lucky because nearly every day there was sunshine and beautiful, blue skies (which I love) and I actually caught the sun. Fancy that lol.

All my umbrellas tend to reverse whenever a strong wind hits it.

I don't have a LOT of chances to try out umbrellas with wind. Heck, down here, we see MORE umbrellas in the summer to protect us from the sun than the rest of the year!

nah..my current umbrella is a piece of crap that was given to me. it's very hard to find a decent quality umbrella anymore it seems. tho i had a "bell" type one when i was a kid that held up to the wind much better.

Considering my umbrella was free it's not bad at all. Hardly ever use it though because I'm one of those people where it has to be monsoon conditions before I even CONSIDER taking a brolly out with me. It's not one that I can place in a bag either, I have to carry it, which is a real pain. If it was one I could put in my bag, I'd probably take it out with me all the time although, like I said, I'd only use it in monsoon conditions lol.

i have got a couple of umbrellas, one is pink with cats on, and one is green with dogs on! i have got some boring black blue ones and they are those telescopic type, that take you ages to get back in to their little sleeve. but all my umbrellas have this endearing little habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. i carry them about for months, sort my handbag out, leave them indoors and it rains ! i was sorting out my glovebox in my car the other lunch time and what did i find ??? an umbrella !! but i don't remember putting it in there!! i can honestly say the last time i bought a really expensive umbrella was in the 60's when i was working up in london. that was in the days before telescopic umbrellas were invented and carrying an umbrella was not cool. but my 60's umbrella was very slim and yes it was also navy blue ! still got in the way and tripped you up though.

Mine was more of a medium blue than navy blue. Hubby has an umbrella that is absolutely minging (dirty) and he has been known to use it if he's going out somewhere on his own. Mind you, a tall guy like himself holding up a brolly with cats and dogs on it isn't gonna do much for his ego either is it? Haha! I think the blue one I had was telescopic. My latest isn't but I can press a little button at the bottom and it goes whoosh! and opens out. I like that..and for a free umbrella is rather impressive, actually!

Hi. Janey1966. I once had a navy blue umbrella that I used to carry. It broke in 2008. My daughter messed with the silver edges and it could no longer let back up again. I bought an umbrella in 2009 and this one got taken away from me. So, I bought another umbrella that looks almost exactly like what I have before. And, it works just right. I have had umbrellas in the past that would fly up when the wind would hit it. This was very embarrassing. I always wanted an umbrella that would not fly up as the wind may hit it.

Hi cream97! It's all to do with how strong the spokes are, apparently. An umbrella is only as good as the steel within it. Unfortunately, most unbrellas can't be opened up and "tried" in the shops so we can only find out how good they are once we use them!

Like Mary Poppins you mean? Sorry, I couldn't resist that. Yes, you are right, some umbrellas tend to be a bit TOO strong don't they? I know Mum prefers a more dainty umbrella than the bigger one I have. In fact, my Dad has one the same as me but Mum never uses it, always gets the smaller one out of the drawer.

I have yet to own an umbrella that the wind didn't turn inside out. It just can't be found. What does an umbrella need to be made of to keep its shape. Does anyone know?

I would say those golfing umbrellas are the best as they are very big and - if memory serves me right, like a dome shape coming over the top of your head, if that makes sense. It would take some gust of wind to turn one of those inside out. Not cheap though.

I own one, its in our SUV but the last time I used it was 3 yrs ago I think in the winter. It was snowing all the time, non stop, it was the worst winter we ever had in terms of quantity of snow and I used it to go for a walk. It was ok, didnt turn inside out. Most of the time, if its raining, hubby will let me out close to the door so I dont get wet. Then he runs like hell to join me haha!! We barely use umbrellas.

I take it you drive a lot? Nothing wrong in that. I can't because I don't drive but I would LOVE IT if John could afford an SUV, awesome vehicles for getting around in! John's car is from about 1994 and is still going strong, er, JUST! Luckily, his nephew loves fixing cars and has fixed his lately, saving John a fortune!

Ur question is the most unusual one and pretty interesting as well.I do hav an old umbrella til now its reliable. This inside out case happened with me 2-3 times and you know what in my college days a guy had eye on me and its very obvious girls do tend to throw tantrums in such cases. And in one fine rainy day my umbrella turned inside out near him.I was so embarrassed. But one thing good was he got chance to come up to me.

Awww how sweet, I like that! I should've tried that one when I was younger but I wasn't really "into" umbrellas then. I could've ended up with a wonderful hunk if I'd done what you did. Well done! Did the relationship amount to anything? Sorry for being nosey but I just thought I'd ask.

For me my umbrella age is about only one year long because everyday I get used of it so that long it is enough.
