So, a variant on my yearly "Desert Island" game. We've taken our 5 favorite books to that island, so this time, let's take our 10 foods we can't live without.
The rules are these:
* You have access to a deep cave where ice & water are.
* You have the option of fire, as there is wood & rock on the island. The industrious among you may build your own pit barbecue, or even an above ground oven.
* If you're not a vegetarian, there is wild game you can trap & eat, or domesticate for milk & eggs, if you need it.
* You may be as creative as you know how with whatever you eat, as I'm granting you a generous spice cabinet, with enough spices to keep you 'til you attract a ship (with your signal fire), & all the condiments you'll need. In my spices, sea salt isn't necessary, as I can get it from--doyuh!--the sea, but I will have whole black peppercorns & as much McCormick chili powder as they can produce.
* You can have whatever spices YOU prefer in your collection. Perishables must be canned, freeze-dried, or otherwise preserved, or grow naturally on your island.
Here are my 10 MUST HAVES:
RICE
UNBLEACHED WHOLE WHEAT STONE GROUND FLOUR
TOMATOES (I found seeds in the shipwreck)
SEEDLESS ORANGES
CORN
POTATOES
CARROTS
GREEN BEANS
CHICKEN BROTH (I'll catch the wild pigs, as I MUST HAVE...
PORK
I will, naturally, try out various wild greens I find on the island, & pray for them not to be poisonous.
And just maybe bananas grow there, though in order to have fruit, I'd need to know how to cultivate them.
These would sustain me, but MAN would I ever miss pizza, red seedless grapes, & peanuts! Among other things...

a tea plant to get leaves for tea
a plum tree
wheat (so I guess the way to grow the grain) can be either "soft wheat" "hard wheat" or "Bulgar" wheat
tomatoes, guess I found those seeds too
onions, yes, I'll grow them if I must
beans of almost any sort...
potatoes
carrots
basil - yes I mean FRESH basil (would like fresh mint too)
and an orange tree - I don't care if it has seeds...
I'll kill what I need to kill if I don't manage to kill myself first...

I suppose I'd forgotten what a tea-aholic you are!
It probably could grow there. The term "desert island," as you know, is a literary catch-all drawer, so it can likely grow anything you want--within reason. I'm guessing you might want to take your wheat stored in waterproof canisters, unless you have a large island of the proper soil & climate, plus a way to harvest & grind it...;o
I do understand your desire for fresh basil. I feel the same way about cilantro...which probably doesn't grow on your average island. Sigh...oh, well, it's supposed to be about hard choices! :)

I would definitely go for the rice, flour and beans. I would also say a potato so I can grow some. Some yeast would be welcome and hopefully chickens will magically appear on the island. I would want the fruits and vegetables to have seeds that I can plant, you can get almost anything to grow anywhere if you create the environment. And I would really like some matches, I am not good at making fire!

Yeah, in my house, green beans are a staple! :o)
Yes, I did say there were wild critters. Your island can have chickens if you want. Pigs & edible snakes, etc., & if you can devise a sharp stick, or know how to "tickle" ocean critters, then you'll have fish, too!
As for starting a fire--why do you think I gave you rocks? Can't some of them be flint?
Or do you wear glasses? On sunny days, they're handy magnifiers, with which you can start a fire!
I just hope there's more wild fruit growing there. But at least the oranges would prevent scurvy! :o)

I've done it--often! LOL! Yeah, what is it about cooking outdoors by a stream or up in the mountains which completely raises flavor by a factor of 10, anyhow? :o)
