Why do guys like to grow beards/mustaches?

I really don't get it because it makes them look like too old.
Also when they just grow a few hairs they get excited about that. I asked my brother and he said because were men and we don't want to look girly or whatever.
I was like our you serious that's all there is to it. Man I just don't get it and it's kinda gross when food gets stuck in the beard or the mustache.
I know that my mom made my dad shave off his mustache just for that reason because when she would kiss him she would feel disguted so she didn't want to know more and so my dad shaved it off.
I don't what may be the reason, but why, why do guys love their mustaches or their beards so much they treat them like royalty I simply don't get it. So if anybody does feel welcomed to leave your opinion behind.

My husband has a full beard and moustache. He wears it because he has very senvitive skin and shaving bothers him...or so he says. I think he just doesn't want to take the time to shave 
.
If he would decide to shave it off, it would have to be in the winter, because in the summer his face gets tan, and he would look like he had a partial mask on if he shaved.

I think it's a fashion thing among men,just like the hairdos among women,to make them more attractive. It means something to them,also to some women,like me,lol
