There are a lot of natural methods to get rid of the fleas, but I think it's quite difficult to keep them away for long.
I heared that garlic and yeast (given in small quantities) can help.
You better read this article, somebody recommended it to me here, on mylot, and I've added it on my favorites list:

Hi Ace,
I get rid of the fleas and the ticks from my pups with frontline spray and up till now it worked. I tried the tweezing thingy but then it was tiresome and there was the risk of killing the tick which in turn spread more ticks with the eggs. Another option is to take your dog to the beach and bathe them there fleas and ticks can't stand the saltiness and in the neck of time they are gone. After that to ensure that they get prevented from having ticks and fleas again spray on frontline on the skin or you can ask your vet for Advocate I think it's an injectable. Advocate prevents and geys rid of the mites as well.

LOL. I'll just take something that works...
I have 5 dogs and 15 cats.. Frontline will put me in the poor house. But it is starting to look like my only option.. They are BAD this year.. I have put stuff on my dogs twice - bathed them in a flea bath and things came back worse then before I used the stuff... Ugh.

about keeping fleas away from pets is very hard if using home remedies.the only remedy that i know of without using veterinarian prescribed is using a twizzer or you know that thing girls used to pull their arm pit hair.used that to pull the fleas off.its very hard to use fingers.its hard work but in the end its worth it.
