I wouldnt mislead if I could help it. I would just say I dont know I was preoccupied or sorry but can you help me to go across the street or give me direction towards some place as I am new to the area or something like that so that they would leave me alone. Misleading might make them suspect something fishy if they dont find anything or anybody in the direction I point. But asking them for help might make them wait at the same spot - and still not search the place. Therefore, when they leave the place, they will truly not return. If, however, I mislead, and they realize that I did that, they could return before police arrives. This is my logic anyway. Of course there is a risk. But it does offer a better chance!
