Determination of age of an ancient object.

Age of any object is determined either by Carbon dating, or Uranium dating and so on. Let me know what are the methods applied and what is the scietific background & for what age what method is applied ?

yes i know i have heard and i think its carbon 14 right? they determine it by their half life and decay.
