Sania Mirza, Shoaib Malik, Pakistan, India, and media

Phew, that was a big list... Anyway, I watched the Commonwealth Games, and I watched my little princess from Hyderabad. I for one was surprised that she should've played for India. I am surprised Shoaib Malik allowed it, and more so Pakistanis. I don't know what the Pakistani media made of it. But I am terribly disappointed with our press. If there were brickbats for her getting married to Shoaib Malik (whom I am grudgingly learning to accept as a sportsman), there should've been praises also for her. I found the front page absolutely silent as if it were a non event. Hey, we make so much sound about giving a small amount to Pakistan for their flood victims, shouldn't we acknowledge the corresponding goodwill gesture - not forcing our girl to play for them? I dont really know whether she wanted to play for Pakistan and was not allowed, or what the CWG rules are in this context. Nevermind those rules. She always had a right to abstain, but she didn't! Great girl, Sania! Time we started looking for positives as well. What do you think?

Yes! We have to see these things as a good sign. At least the Pakistanis didn't confuse sports with politics. But I don't think that the media here should blow up this thing and corrupt the strict religious people here and there. Let Sania enjoy her game and let us enjoy her beauty and game!

I too felt elated and surprised as well when i came to know that Sania is playing for India. At least sportsmanship is not marred by dirty politics. Our media has played a very dubious role in publicizing about CWG.Though there were certain shortcomings as accepted by the management committee but our media just blew everything out of proportion.

Actually, all journalists got drunk, and they had to report for duty with the hangover, so they did the best they could under the circumstances.

Wait a minute.Am i getting it correct what you are saying? We make lot of sound giving a small amount to Pakistan for their flood victims and so you want India to be glad that Pakistani or her husband didnt FORCE her to play for their country?Do you think husband or that country has got RIGHT to ask her or force her or put pressure on her to play for Pakistan. Am i getting this correct?

Piya - when we are amongst friends, we still have something we might dislike, but we overlook them, and highlight what we like about them more. Our politicians and press have prejudiced our minds. Same is true of Pakistani politicians, and press. This much of bad press against India or Srilanka was not there even with LTTE. Did you notice that? So though there are some differences, dislike doesnt engulf the entire nation, for generations. Agreed we've had partition, and subsequent wars right upto Kargil, and other terrorist activities to blame them on Pakistan. We only know our perspective. They have theirs. And I heard their perspective as well. There are issues in which India has been terribly wrong. For example liberation of East Pakistan. That was their internal affair. We've done that with East Pakistan, and we tried something opposite with Sri Lanka. The point is, we should learn to mind our own business. If we'd done that, we could appeal to the UN - with a clean chit. Now, when China interferes with our Arunachal, others are likely to raise voice saying - well you did something like that with Bangladesh. Same is true of Kashmir. We dug our own grave with politicians not worth their salt. There should be some education standard set for our politicians as well. This is because they didnt think of repurcussions. An educated person would show more restraint. I am sorry but I am not satisfied with the qualifications of many of our Prime Ministers, and Presidents. Times have changed, politicians should know economics and finance, should know something about warfare, apart from knowing how to talk to people and using computers. Pakistan sells like hot cake, and so people are incited. Same thing happens at the other end of the border. May be it is time - we started doing things differently. Remember, Germany and England fought bitterly in World War II, but they dont hold grudges. Nor do Austria, France, and Russia. If you know something about Nanking massacres, you'd wonder how Chinese are able to sit by side of Japanese. When other countries are able to put things behind, and move forward, why cant we do the same? Why we end up like middle east - forever fighting?

a. We make lot of sound giving a small amount to Pakistan for their flood victims and so you want India to be glad that Pakistani or her husband didnt FORCE her to play for their country? Yes. b. Do you think husband or that country has got RIGHT to ask her or force her or put pressure on her to play for Pakistan. No. Actually, everybody out here expects Pakistan to be bad. And when that doesnt happen, we should be highlighting it, instead of letting our prejudices remain in our minds. Instead, we underplay those. Effectively letting the feelings of mistrust proliferate.

Yes nice to see Sania in commonwealth game playing for India. Because when Sania was getting married with Shoaib Malik the Pakistani cricketer then man peoples feel that now Sania never plays for India. Because now she are Pakistani. But now she comes for playing for India are proved that there hearts are Indian. And always playing for India.

I wish our press had appreciated that! They are there to write both sides of the story and not only the bad side! It is sweet on part of Pakistanis not to have objected to her playing. There could've been red tape created just to prevent her you know!

Salam ! I Just Read ur Discussion, and it seems to me like two pakisatnis r discussing, Dear Vandana u r right, our corrupt politics r playing with our minds,We lived together for around two to three hundred years, and now our govt wants to fight wuth each other for small points(kashmir etc),The marriage of sania mirza n shoaib was a bond of love between two countries, n dear Vandana u know husbands hav rights to force thier wifes to accept thier wishes, but dear what ever sania is its only bcoz of india, how can shoaib take her true identity,n 2ndly now adays wifes r the ruling party in Homes..lol..well dear what u think what should we do to force our govt to vote among all pakistanis and indians that what they want? Peace or War? But they r not going to do tht u know y? Bcoz both of our countries army budget well fell up to 80%,as i belive both ike peace n love in the region, Religions r not enemies, Politics is the main problem, our youth should take some good steps, U will not belive that every pakistani wants to resolve the kashmir issue by making it one kashmir under both Govt, like Cypru, lets make it a true heaven by making it our combine picnic spot, I hope one day it happens, I wana see a UN army of Pakistan and India, i will b happy if siks visit pakistan without visa, But for tht v have to fight with our Govt..

Honestly donharis, I am ok with making Kashmir a country that is governed by Kashmiris, and helped by two elder brothers, i.e., India, and Pakistan. I hope Kashmiris would be agreeable to that though. They would need sugar and wheat from your end, and rice and and pulses from our end. We both could supply vegetables, in return we could get their apples. :) Tourism could be their main stay. Obviously both India and Pakistan would stand to gain monetarily because our nations would be declared safe from militants. And our poor would cease to be poor. So tourists visiting Kashmir might just add Lahore, and New Delhi in their itinerary since all are close by. :) Oh no, our politicians wouldn't dream of that. Nor would our priests. Our politicians want their Swiss accounts filled up rather than letting our countries flourish in amity. In the discussion above, the person said there is a religious angle to our differences. I dont think so donharis. There was a religious angle even when Jews were massacred. But Jews and Germans are no longer at each others throats. So I would say no good religion would expect anything to be done forcibly. That is why Akbar was great. Not Allauddin Khilji, or Taimur the Lame. Not only Akbar, even Jehangir, and Shah Jahan showed that religious tolerance. Down south, we had other muslims who didn't force religions. So it is politicians who are playing it shrewd and using religion to keep our minds engaged in fighting while they take away monies. You know - kind of diversion... :( Unfortunately, priests are also helping them instead of reading through their game plan. As to militants, I condemn them outright! Down with all forms of militancy. No belief is worth tears of a mother, tears of a helpless child, tears of aged parent who is not likely to live for long. Somewhere humanity must prevail and I believe all religions and rules were born to do that. I checked your profile. I can only add two things. I am not happy with losing young people on war front while old politicians increase the sizes of their bellies. And I am very pleased to see my little princess play for India. :) You have to admit she is pretty. :) And she plays great!!!
