Here is how to do this one...we want to know what number (call it x) added to 1/3 plus 1/4 = 1 So, we have x + 1/3 + 1/4 = 1 I like to clear fractions. Both 3 and 4 (the denominator of the fractions) are both factors of 12. So, I am going to multiply everything by 12. (Sometimes, I say it this way...if you were going to find a common denominator for the fractions, what would it be? It would be 12). 12(x) + 12(1/3) + 12(1/4) = 12(1) We multiply everything by 12. We get: 12x + 4 + 3 = 12 Simplify: 12x + 7 = 12 Isolate the variable: 12x + 7 - 7 = 12 - 7 Finish up: 12x = 5 Divide both sides by 12 (12/12)x = 5/12 x = 5/12 Here is another way to solve it. x + 1/3 + 1/4 = 1 Find the common denominator for the fractions. It is 12. Rewrite the equation using the common demonimator. x + 4/12 + 3/12 = 12/12 x + 7/12 = 12/12 x + 7/12 - 7/12 = 12/12 - 7/12 x = 5/12 And...good job to the other poster with this answer!

Let the number required be x Then our equation will be 1/3 + 1/4 + x = 1 7/12 + x = 1 x = 1 - 7/12 x = 12-7/12 x = 5/12 So the number required is 5/12 !
