Unable to download clearly viewable photos from m-card

I'm unable to download pictures from my 1-G-byte Sandisk memorycards to my computer. It will simply not work whether i try from cardreader or camera (EOS 20D). Yet the pictures are there when I browse through them in my camera. This is most confusing. Can anyone suggest a solution to this dilemma.
