How to cope with TMJ and what do you do to make the pain lesser?

I have TMJ and I am wearing a bite guard for the past five months. But it does not seem to work much. I have been doing a little reading in the internet on how to manage the pain and some claim that regular excercise will help it go away. Does anybody know if this is true and has anybody really been cured of this? Or at least made the pain lesser and bearable? Does yoga help and what kind of excercises help to reduce or help keep the pain in check? And has anybody been cured of this? I have neck and shoulder pain, headache, clogged ears, ringing in the ears, pain in the jaw area, swelling in the cheeks, lips etc. I do not want to go in for a surgery even if that is the last option. Please share your experiences so that I may at least control my pain. Your valuable suggestions are welcome.

Hi there. Sorry for not replying earlier. I have not been very regular here. My tmj pain has becaome very negligable. I went to my phsiotheraphist and had massage, ultrasound and heat fermentation for about two weeks. And I keep excercising(the ones which they taught) the jaw. I have joined a gym and am working out for general fitness as well as strengthening my muscles and my whole body. That makes the muscles in the body much better because I keep stretching them twice a day or atleast once a day. And I do excercise six days a week. My neck, shoulder and arm pain is much lesser now since they have strengthened. And my bruxism is also in control. I try not to overwork my jaw and am always careful of what I eat. It is not only the jaw for me. I have chronic back pain which had spread to my legs as well as my mid and upper back. So, you could say that my whole body hurts like hell.
But regularly working out and eating right as well as keeping your mind relaxed helps a lot. The day I get tensed and worked up over something or someone, all the pain surfaces. So, visit your dentist or take an appointment with a physiotheraphist, get fit and it should come under control. Hope this helps and works for you.

I went through a terrible session with TMJ about 2 years ago. My regular Dr prescribed advil and muscle relaxers (this was the cause of my TMJ) and she referred me to an acupuncturist. Took about 2 weeks, but it went away. Every now and again the TMJ returns and I just go get a massage or acupuncture and the pain goes away.
