How to tell a person to cancel an agreed activity nonverbally?

Because it appears to be rude to say it verbally, say like: No I decide not to. Sorry I can't. I have some other things to do. What alternatives are there that would keep the person give some freedom then at the same time not cause him any hurt? The goal is to cancel the activity since the time it occupies is required for some other urgent matter. Any recommendation that resolve the conundrum?

People should be honest and give a quick text with the reason why you have cancelled, It's really annoying when people don't turn up or just text saying they are not coming without giving a reason why.

What can the buddy do? Life is such a mess, it popped that an additional joke though verbal would make things right, I have yet to say it works but from the sound of it alone, it makes me confident enough. I just don't know what kind of joke that would be.
