So who likes Asian horror movies? |
| |
| Lots of asian horror movies are seeing major North American remakes and distribution. 'The Ring' really started the whole Asian horror remake fad gripping most of North America now, followed closely by 'The Grudge'. Remakes of 'The Eye' and 'Pulse' are set to come out within this next year. My favorites, though, are the originals. From Japanese to Korean and Chinese, I have a list of my favorite ones that includes: Ringu Dark Water Ju-On: the Grudge Barking Dogs Never Bite Uzumaki A Tale of Two Sisters Whispering Cooridors Memento Mori Wishing Stairs The Eye Premonition The Audition There are more I have watched and did not care much for, such as Living Hell and Unborn but Forgotten. So those of you out there who like asian horror movies, recommend so to me. List your favorites and why you like them! | | | | | |

| | Well I love them and I hate them... The movies are great, but too great... They are so damn scary that I don't dare to watch them. When I do I can't sleep well for days. | | | | | | |

| | Takashi Miike is something of a legend in the arena of horror movies. He's done a lot of short little mini-movies, as I recall. | | | |

| | No offense, but the American versions are a lot better. For example, in the Ringu movie, the entire movie you don't get to see anything, it just makes you think you might see something scary, but the entire film there was nothing to see. Yeah I like "The Eye" too its good. I swear HK should really get back to producing better story movies. Most of them suck now. | | | | | | |

| | Ah well, it's a point of view then, isn't it? For me, the American versions were good but not as good as the originals. Particularly 'The Grudge'. I don't know, I myself just didn't care for the way most of the individual's stories were squished into one overall story. Part of the interest for me was seeing how the curse affected so many who barely had any contact at all with the house. I'm more for psychological horror though. I don't much like seeing the evil - THAT cheapens it for me. I much prefer to have it left to my imagination, much in the same manner as a writer might leave a story with an open ending. | | | |

| | I have never cared too much for the American re-makes, but I do love watching the originals. The Sub-titles can be a little annoying, so usually I'll have to watch the movie twice. The first time I read the sub-titles and try to watch what's going on, on the screen. But I find that I miss a lot of jump out of your skin parts. So then I have to re-watch, and just watch what's going on and ignore the sub-titles. It might seem odd to some people, but I think that they're really worth watching twice to get the full benefit. I've found that recently, a lot of the Asian horror movies give me the creeply crawlies much more than American movies do. And when an Asian horror movie is re-made in the American style, I think it loses a lot of the flavor, and suspense that the orignals had packed with. I can't really list my favorites, because I cannot spell them. Sad? Yes, but I'm willing to admit it. I watch any, and every Asian horror movie I can get my greedy horror/gore ridden hands on. ^_^ | | | | | | |

| | Glad to hear from someone else who'll watch just about anything asian horror related! Some have been bad but some of them have been very good. I'm not sure what the American remakes lack. I think it's the psychological horror aspect. A lot of the remakes seem to enhance the gore or the "oo look, here's the monster!" aspects, which take away from the mystery of most of these movies. | | | |

| | I'm not familiar with most of these. Thanks for mentioning, I'll have to check them out. It's always interesting to see how different cultures approach the horror genre--or any genre, for that matter. | | | | | | |

| | That is very true! I watch a lot of drama movies as well when I can because it's nice to see the differences in cultures and yet some of the similarities in themes and such. | | | |

| | I have to agree with you there. Too many American horror movies focus on the gore, bloodshed and violence that really takes away from the realism. Perhaps that's why asian horror movies are so chilling. Because the sense of realism can usually lull you into a nice comfort zone. | | | |
