Blu-ray and original DVD's....what's the future?

I have been collecting (watching for them on sale) box sets of old tv sitcoms and shows...the classics...back when TV was worth turning on and watching. However, now, with Blu-ray coming out...I see that they are making everything "new" in blu-ray. I understand that blu-ray dvd players will play the "old" style of DVD, but the regular kind of DVD player won't play blu-ray. I even see that they are offering a blu-ray and the original style disks in packs now. I guess so you can use the original now and still have the blu-ray for when you buy your next player, as by then everything will be blu-ray. At least I assume that is why they are doing that. Okay, fine. I guess that holds us for awhile, but at the same time...how long before the blu-ray dvd players don't play this original style of dvd and all my box sets would be useless? I don't see any of these sitcom box sets (current or oldies) coming out in blu-ray. So what is everyone's take on this? I don't want to loose the best times on TV all in the name of progress! TV ain't worth the energy it takes to press the button to turn the junk on these days!

I understand your frustration. I wish I could say I have many dvd's anymore but within a few months of buying them the kids trash them. *sigh* But I feel the same about say the VHS tapes. I know they are not the greatest quality picture nor do they make them anymore but they are the only things that last with my kids. But yeah I'd be mad about all those boxed sets you spent your money on being phased out and useless. I was also reading an article that the prices of blu ray's are going to drop, wich is why with all these new tv's are coming with new blu rays. I dunno do our best to keep it going.

Yeah, give me the VHS back! I have so many good shows on there! Even now when they put them on DVD, they cut stuff that I have on VHS. I even went a bought a inexpensive VHS player and have it in the closet incase mine ever breaks. I'll still have my VHS! Just to expensive to keep up with the new stuff, isn't it! Guess I better go get a regular DVD player and put it in the closet too!

*LOL* Thankfully I can find VCR's quite often at Salvation Army. The question often arises if the tape too old or is it the vcr? Plus you can find old VHS tapes for next to nothing. People sell the DVD's used for a few dollars. I've seen ones that aren't anything special for $4 @ good will used, when if you look often enough you can find some @ Wal-mart or Targets $5 rack... NEW! I'd honestly I'd almost say not to bother with all this fuss. So much is streaming online, not always what we want or prefer but the price is usually right.. FREE. Though sometimes the commercials get annoying BUT you know that was the nice thing about DVD's when they first came out you could skip the commercials. But to save on buying I can deal with a commercial here and there no different than watching tv anyways.

I completely agree. My sister and brother-in-law got my parents a Blu-ray player for Christmas this past year. They assured my parents it played regular DVDs as well. But I don't think I'll be buying a Blu-ray player any time soon. Because as soon as I do, another kind of player will be out and I'll have to upgrade to that. It's annoying. Progress they say? More like money making for big companies.

Oh my gosh, I couldn't have said it better! I held out for the DVD and did VHS for a long time. Now they don't sell VHS movies anymore! But I have been watching sales over the last few years to get my favorites from VHS on DVD. Have done pretty good and never spending more than $5-$9 on a DVD to replace the VHS movie...my main concern there would be if the tape breaks...movie gone! I recoreded lot of the 80's sitcoms like Family Matters, Mama'sFamily, etc on VHS and love watching the laughter. Sitcoms these days are pathetic and disgusting. Yeah. progress? LIke you said... more like making more money! I won't be going to Blu-ray anytime soon. I am watching for a blu-ray player on sale in my price range and will get that and have it for when my current player takes a dump and if I find a blu ray DVD that needs to replace a VHS I would consider buying it, but I am NOT replacing all the regular DVD's that I have! Good grief...They make home entertainment such a hassel! IF I had family around, I'd end it and bring out hte board games and radio shows!
