To those of you who have worn retainers (after having braces), how long have you worn those retainers? And when you stopped, did your teeth retracted? I have worn braces for around 8 months and was told to wear retainers therafter. I had been wearing plastic retainers for more than 3 years though. Just this monday, my retainers are missing. I am worried that my teeth would go back to its old poor positions again.

After having braces I wore my retainers for just a year. That's what the dentist told me to. So far my teeth didn't go back to its old positions but I can say that it did move a little but it's barely noticeable. The dentist told me that once the teeth has positioned itself to its new position and being held by retainers, it will form a new set of bones inside the gums. These new bones will be the foundation for the new positions of the teeth. As long as you wear the retainers for at least a year, these new bones will then harden and so it will be difficult for the teeth to return to its old positions. However, our tongue (especially during sleep) and eating may still cause a little movement on our teeth but it's not really a major one. :)
