SSI and Disability

I have a question for anyone that might know the answer. I found out yesterday that I was approved for disability and I will start getting money for that the end of July. I received a check yesterday that I thought was for my tax return because it was from department of treasury, but I was notified today that I was approved for SSI. What I'd like to know is will I still get the SSI after I start getting the disability or will that stop then? Either way works for me, but getting both would be even better because it costs so much to live in America. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Personally there are a lot of people that are actually eligible and receive both. I know I was receiving both of these when I first got married, but no longer could get SSI due to my husbands income. I think overall they actually will first figure out what they owe you in back $$ and send you checks for the appropriate amount, and then they will probably figure out how much you will get from SSI and SSD and send you a letter and the appropriate checks from there. If you are working you may need to cut back on your hrs. or find out from SS what you need to do from here.

I'm not sure what will happen, but my case worker told me today that she was approving my medicaid because I got the SSI. She said that won't affect my foodstamps, but when the disability kicks in that it will affect it. I don't know if that means that I will get both or if the one will stop when the other begins. I guess I will have to wait and see in July. Thanks for the response!

You need to talk to your regional Social Security Office. When my first husband became ill, they said he was qualified for SSDI (disability) and then they checked some other factors, to see if he perhaps would qualify for SSI as well. When we asked why the Social Security People said that if they could qualify him for even one dollar of SSI he would automatically get Medicaid. He did not qualify, but that was Okay because he had short term disability insurance to cover us until SSDI kicked in. He had had good insurance while he was working and we were really okay.

I don't know what DFS is. Here, in Kansas, it is SRS, so I guess it is the same. It never hurts to check, I guess. It was about fourteen years ago when I had that experience or fifteen.

I called family services today and they told me that she was approving my medicaid application. I still haven't heard about when I will start chemo so I'm starting to get a bit fed up with those folks. At least now I know that I will be able to get transportation to appointments even if my brother can't get the car as long as I know far enough in advance to be able to make the arrangements with the transportation company. Have a great day!

So does that mean I should check with DFS to see if they have approved my medicaid? I haven't heard from them yet and that application was pending before I even started the SSI application. Thanks for that little piece of info!

I do not think you will get both because their is a limit you can earn while receiving SSI. I would suggest you call your disability administrator and ask because the last thing you would want is to get your SSI penalized if they think you have overdrawn the limit.
So start with your disability administrator and perhaps Social Security office also. In IL I know recipients cannot generate the maximum which I believe is $3000 per year. But please check that out because if it doesn't stop automatically last thing you need is to loose the SSI over it. Best of luck daeckardt.

Actually, the disability payments will be more than the SSI is so when that starts up it will probably be the SSI that is eliminated. But at least I have that coming in until July. Thanks for the response!

I don't know in the state where I live. SSI is the disability payment if they didn't work much in their life and Social Security if they have but I've heard some states get both. So, it all depends probably on your state.I don't know about your state. You're so good at doing online research that you should look up that question about your state. If people in your state have social security and SSI.

I tried to do a search on it, but all I found was a lot of listings for lawyers and other things that didn't answer the question I was trying to answer. Thanks for the response!

I used to work in social work. It is my understanding that you get one or the other. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure that is how it works, but I couldn't find anything that said that specifically. At least I have the one until I get the other, but having both would be nice. Thanks for the response!
