I never knew autopsy results take so long

Yesterday I decided to call the hospital where my husband died at and see if they could send me a copy of the autopsy report. He said that the only thing they had complete was the death certificate which I already got. They said there is 200-300 slides they have to examine under a microscope and because they have so many others to do as well that it will take 2-3 months or longer until the autopsy is complete. I asked if they would send me the results when they are finished but they do not do that. I have to call back in about 3 months and see if it is done. At that time if it is then they will forward the results to me.
I wonder if this is what its like everywhere or if this hospital is just slow. Its a city hospital but not as large as in huge citys like say New York City. I'm guessing in larger citys they would have even more autopsys to do and it would take them even longer so the wait would be longer then the 2-3 months that I will have to wait. Then again though they may have more people working in larger places to get the job done faster. If it was someone famous it would get taken care of right away. Murder victims and things like that they probably do on a more hurried basis as well where as they know pretty much what my husband died from so its not really a huge rush.

2-3 months is pretty standard for results. Preliminary results can be provided pretty quickly, but other results take longer.
It's like some medical tests, the results can take weeks to get.
We have a morgue in our city that takes cases from all over the province sometimes, it takes the soldiers who die overseas as well when they come back.
It's not always a matter of them being busy, but rather how long results can take. If there's a central lab that these tests are being sent to, and they come in from all over the country, then maybe this could explain delays.
Some cases are treated with priority status, that doesn't help either.
Keep contacting them, at least once a month. Sometimes they can be done sooner than later, this is usually a worst case window that they gave you.
