Palm Sunday

I went to church earlier but I didn't bring any palms to be blessed, because I was sure that there would be so many people who'll line up since I'm in the city right now, and my mother has already brought lots of palms to be blessed in our province... I believe that the blessed palms can ward off evil, but I got into thinking "do all this people who go out off their way just for their palms to be blessed really believe in it's power, or is it just another tradition?" What do you think?

Tradition and belief makes it all faith. If the tradition continues long enough then it becomes what one would call faith. It becomes a belief on behalf of those who take part. It is just another one of those things that have come down through the ages. I wonder if it has changed any?

I've tried to respond countless times earlier but was unable to post my response... I got to reflect on what you said and I found myself agreeing to your opinion...it's quite true...

I believe that it is mostly tradition. It is not a tradition that I have seen, but we do have palms in service on Palm Sunday, we did have ashes from last years palms on Ash Wednesday, but it is to me more of a representation of Christ than a token to ward off evil.

Well, I grew up believing that if you have the blessed palm in your home evil can't enter, but I forgot to add that it's because Christ is already inside protecting and blessing your home...

i thinkmany people believe when they do things. however, there are also many people who do things because they have been doing those things, and lost the meanings in the actions. they become habits. and so the palm sunday is no exception. i think the palm sunday believers who flocked to church and brought palms to be blessed actually believed in the ritual, not necessarily that those palms would be able to dispel evils, but to welcome Christ in their houses and lives.

I went to church yesterday too- but it has been a while since we had palms blessed, we still have them in our house so we won't need new ones. yes, there are really so many people who buy palms to be blessed, some of them do believe in it's "power", but I think otehr just do them since it's become a habit or they're obliged to.

It is very disappointing that I am not able to attend a church palm Sunday considering I am out of the country at the moment. It has been a while since I have the change to attend a catholic mass. I miss going to church with my loved ones in the Philippines. God bless guys and do not just go to church just to say that you prayed but live the with the teachings of God.

I believe it is both belief and tradition. When my boyfriend and I went to church yesterday, a lot of people were bringing palms. I remember when I was a child my father would put it in the front door and said to me it does not allow bad things to come into our house.

In my family, we do believe that having the palms at the front door would help ward evil, also, it's a tradition. We always buy 2 palms to be blessed and we put one in our altar at home, and the other at our front door
