I was surprised to see that there are some people who think a tomboy is a curse. Actually it is a very normal state of being, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.
Many girls where I live grow up as tomboys. It means they act like "boys" which is a very incorrect way of speaking about gender, because women have always been just as active, dirty and hardworking as men.
It is only in the past couple hundred years that women have become "femenine," wearing dresses and putting on makeup, and such.
Dresses are a social construction, so they are not defining characteristics of women.
If a woman chooses not to dress up, there is nothing wrong with that. If a woman wants to exercise and build strong muscles, that is just as natural as anything else in the world.
Does the word tomboy have a bad connotation where you come from? Why?

Oh no...tomboy is not negative in my opinion...I used to be one. I played just as hard as the boys. My grandfather had to climb a tree once to get me out when I climbed and got stuck..lol..I was a hand full. My youngest daughter is a tomboy too. She loves to fish and catch frogs. Loves to be outside in nature. I once caught her digging holes in the back yard and when I asked her what she was doing..she said she was looking for fossils...LOL. I think it is natural for girls to want to play too. It is a sad childhood I think where a child isn't allowed to play because of their gender.

Me and my friends were like that too, we would dig for worms, I don't even know why.. we dissected them once but then we felt sorry for them so we stopped..
I can't imagine being scolded for playing in the dirt, if a boy is allowed to do it. I'm glad I didn't have a brother because I'm sure we would have been treated differently andd I would have been angry to see a difference in treatment.

Hi there,
I am from the Philippines and I have a friend in college who's a tomboy. I don't think that people in our community completely accepts them, there are some who is very open minded about it which includes myself and there are some who discriminates them. I know that I grew up tomboyish (act like a boy and loved playing little boy's game such as basketball, climbing trees, etc..), I am not the very "girly" type but I am straight. As you've said "tomboy" pertains to a girl who acts manly or like that of a boy but is a straight woman. Maybe some are just conceited and thinks that girl should be traditional but in this age and modern times women can be anything.
right?
Happy Lotting!

While I was growing up it was very common. For some reason there were way more boys then there were girls in my community. I only say this because it seems that the majority of my friends and my friends friends were mostly boys.
It was almost a natural thing to hang out with them and be considered one of the guys. I climbed trees and roofs back in the day. It was not a cool thing to do it was just simply something we all did.
I can admit that as a child I was considered a Tom Boy it was when I reached high school that my interests changed and I could no longer be considered a Tom Boy, although could relate very well and still hang with the guys.
I suppose for me it changed once I started to like them. lol
It was not considered a bad thing in my days because no one really pointed it out and or made any fun of it, I think it is was afforded me to be able to own my own home and be daring enough to do certain repairs and up keeps traditionally not "expected" by girls.
